Year 6 Parliament House Excursion

As part of our inquiry unit, ‘I am Me’, the Year 6 students went to the city to have a tour of Parliament House. The students are learning how a democracy works and what the role of our government is at both Federal and State levels.
The students met with our Glen Waverley State Member of Parliament, John Mallahy, and explored with him the lower and upper house to learn more about how laws are passed by our government. They also took a walk around the local parks and gardens of Parliament to see the monuments, buildings and gardens that reflect the work of our Victorian government.
Here is what some of our students have learned:
“There is a red and green room in which the politicians debate.” (Leon)
“The mace is used to protect the speaker.” (Kayden)
“The second mace got stolen and the police still don’t know where it is.” (Ryan X)
“There is a chair for the king or queen to sit on in the red room.” (Ryan X)
“There are different roles that people have when making the rules, e.g. the speaker." (Violet)
“The red carpet and the green carpet divide up the rooms.” (Amy)
“There is a really old table with real gold in it in the library.” (Janelle)
“The law/bill starts in the green room and then goes to the red room, and back and forth until a law is made.” (Patrick)
“The chain was fixed in the red room that wasn’t meant to be.” (Patrick)
“The politicians propose laws in the lower house room.” (Josephine)
“There are two major parties called Labor and Liberal.” (Josephine)
“The politicians don’t make rules on their own and there are different parties with their own leaders.” (Tina)
“There is a huge bounty to find the second (stolen) mace.” (Tina)
