Year 5/6 News

Hello everyone!

As mathematicians, we began our Four Operations unit with a focus on addition and subtraction. Students explored a range of strategies to solve problems efficiently and accurately, including the compensation strategy, the vertical algorithm, and using a number line to represent their thinking. We discussed when and why different strategies might be most effective, encouraging flexible thinking and mathematical reasoning. Some students have extended their learning by applying these strategies to decimal and fraction addition and subtraction.

As readers and writers, we continued our exploration of our class novel, War Horse. Students have been able to deepen their comprehension and analytical skills. Throughout the week, students engaged in rich discussion and thoughtful comprehension tasks, examining key events, character motivations, and the impact of different perspectives within the story. They have compared viewpoints, justified their thinking using evidence from the text, and reflected on how characters respond to challenges.

As a community of faith, students created their own Lenten Promises. Students thoughtfully reflected on actions they could give up, particularly behaviours that may hurt others. They also chose positive actions to take up, including promises to help others, show kindness, and be more patient and forgiving. In addition, students identified meaningful ways they can strengthen their connection with God through prayer, gratitude, and reflection.

As Inquiry learners, students explored the Child Safety Policy and examined what it means for our school community. We discussed what child safety should look like, sound like, and feel like in our classrooms,  considering respectful language, inclusive behaviour, and actions that ensure everyone feels valued and protected. Working collaboratively in small groups, students unpacked sections of the Child Safe Policy and summarised the key points in student-friendly language to create a class display.

Home Learning continues this week. This week, it will also be posted onto Google Classroom. Today they have brought it home to work on for the week, due Friday. Attached are the Home Learning answers, if you could please take the time to correct with your child.
