Year 4 News

Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome to Week 5!
What an exciting full week it has been in our classroom. Students enjoyed the fun and community spirit of Shrove Tuesday, followed by the meaningful reflection of Ash Wednesday, helping us begin the season of Lent together. It was wonderful to see students engaging thoughtfully in these experiences while continuing to show enthusiasm, kindness, and curiosity in their learning. Our classroom routines are becoming stronger each day, and it’s lovely to see students growing in confidence, independence, and collaboration.
This week, students will begin working with fractions. We are learning to recognise, represent, and compare fractions, and to understand that fractions show equal parts of a whole. Students are using hands-on materials, visual models, and number lines to deepen their understanding and explain their thinking.
As writers, students are learning about factual recounts. We are focusing on retelling events in time order, using sequencing words, including key details, and writing in clear sentences. Students are practising how to introduce an event, describe what happened, and finish with a concluding statement. Last week, we reflected on our factual recounts about our Water Safety excursion. We used a checklist to identify what we could do to strengthen our recounts.
As a faith filled community, students participated in Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday, marking an important time in our liturgical calendar as we begin the season of Lent. On Shrove Tuesday, students enjoyed coming together in celebration and fellowship, reflecting on the act of sharing and gratitude. On Ash Wednesday, students in the 3/4 cohort participated in a prayerful liturgy, receiving ashes as a symbol of new beginnings and a reminder of the importance of kindness, reflection, and making positive choices. Through these experiences, students were encouraged to think about how they can show compassion, help others, and grow closer to God in their everyday actions.
Last week, we also engaged in our Kids Helpline Session about Resilience, where we unpacked what Resilience is and the 5 P’s of Resilience:
- Positivity - optimism & reframing challenges as opportunities
- Perspective - self-awareness, insight & flexible thinking styles
- Problem-solving - self-efficacy and cognitive competence
- Purpose - finding meaning & helping others
- Persevere - understanding neuroplasticity
After the session, we reflected by coming up with positive self-talk phrases we can say to ourselves when we need them!
We look forward to another positive week ahead!
