Year 3 News

Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome to Week 5!
As faith-filled people, we celebrated Shrove Tuesday and enjoyed eating delicious pancakes together. Long ago, families would use up rich ingredients such as eggs, milk, and sugar before the 40 days of Lent, which is a time of prayer, fasting, and giving. We spent time learning about the meaning behind the day and how it helps us get ready to grow closer to God during Lent. We gathered for Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of Lent. The Year 3s & 4s joined together for a special liturgy, taking time to reflect on the importance of prayer, kindness, and making good choices. During the service, the children received ashes on their foreheads in the shape of a cross. The ashes are a symbol of repentance and remind us to think about how we can improve and follow Jesus more closely.
As readers & writers, we began reading our class novel Matilda written by Roald Dahl. The children were introduced to the extraordinary character of Matilda – a bright and curious young girl who loves reading and learning. We have already enjoyed discussing first impressions of the characters and predicting what might happen next. The children were particularly interested in comparing Matilda’s love of books with their own favourite stories!
As resilient learners, we took part in a special online webinar with Kids Helpline titled “Managing Emotions.” The session was led by facilitator Tabitha, who guided the children through thoughtful and engaging activities to help them better understand their feelings. During the webinar, the children explored different types of emotions, discussed how feelings can affect our behaviour, and learnt practical strategies for managing strong emotions. Tabitha shared helpful techniques, including calming breaths, positive self-talk, and identifying trusted adults who can offer support.
