Year 2 News

Dear Parents and Carers,
What’s been happening in Grade 2 recently?
As inquirers and learners, we have been learning about Bucket Fillers and Dippers. We explored how our words and actions can “fill someone’s bucket” by being kind, helpful and encouraging, or “dip into someone’s bucket” by being unkind or hurtful. Through stories and discussions, students have been identifying what respectful behaviour looks and sounds like in our classroom. We are working hard to choose bucket-filling actions each day and to take responsibility when we make mistakes, helping to create a safe, positive and supportive learning environment for everyone.
As faith-filled people, students from 2SH and 4ZK celebrated Mass with Father Tien last Thursday. Thank you to Father for his service, and well done to the readers in grade 4, as well as Alexandra M and Archie, who brought forth the offertory.
As mathematicians, we learnt to collect and represent data on Shrove Tuesday. Mrs Monaghan and our parent helpers, Angela and Daniel, were kind enough to help us make pancakes in celebration. We asked our classmates which toppings they chose and recorded the results using tally marks. We then created a tally graph and a picture graph to display our data clearly. Students practised interpreting the graphs by asking and answering questions such as “Which topping was the most popular?” and “How many more people chose maple syrup than jam?” It was a fun and meaningful way to apply our learning in statistics.
As readers and writers, we have been learning about recounts. We have explored how recounts retell events in the order they happened and include key features such as an orientation (who, when, where and why), a sequence of events, and a personal comment at the end. Students have been practising using time connectives such as First, Next, After that, and Finally to organise their ideas clearly. We are working on adding descriptive details and expressing our feelings to make our writing more engaging for the reader.
This week, we will be learning about:
- Numeracy: Place Value
- Reading: Understanding Recounts - purpose, structure, language features
- Spelling: The graph /y/ making the sound "e" as in pony.
- Writing: Writing and improving recounts
- Inquiry: Having a growth mindset
Religion: Forgiveness
A reminder that diaries are due each Friday.
Have a great week!
Miss Nadia Ascenzo & Miss Sarah Hogan
