Year 1 News

Dear Parents and Carers, 

We have had another exciting week in the Year 1 learning community! We have been magnificent mathematicians, wonderful writers, and reverent religious thinkers, especially as we took part in some very special religious celebrations.

As a community of faith, we learnt about Shrove Tuesday and the history of why we make pancakes on this special day! As researchers, we found out that long ago, people used this day to use up foods like eggs, milk, and butter before Lent began. Making pancakes reminds us to get ready for Lent and to think about making kind and helpful choices.

As a community of faith, we also took part in prayer that reflected the importance of Ash Wednesday. We participated in the ceremony of receiving ashes from the palms of last year’s Palm Sunday in the shape of a cross on our foreheads. We learnt about what Lent is and the importance of giving, helping others, and making good choices during this special time. 

As mathematicians, we began our learning about place value. We learnt what it means to estimate and that our best guess does not have to be exact, but as close as possible. We also learnt how to efficiently count concrete materials after making an estimation.
