Year 5 News

A Hectic Start to Term 4!
What a whirlwind of activity the Grade 5 students have jumped into this term! The energy is palpable, and we've hit the ground running after a well-deserved break. Our classrooms are buzzing with deep learning and exciting new projects.
Inside the Chambers: Understanding Parliament
We capped off Term 3 with a highly informative incursion by Linked Incursions called Parliament Process. This interactive session offered a fantastic deep dive into the Australian Government system, cleverly breaking down the complex workings of our parliament.
Our students became experts on the essential distinction between rules and the law and gained a clear understanding of how laws are created.
The highlight was undoubtedly the role-playing activity where students enthusiastically stepped into the shoes of various members of parliament, simulating the intricate flow of a bill as it moves through the system to ultimately become law. It was a fascinating glimpse into civic responsibility and democracy in action!
Buddy Adventures: Building Worlds and Underwater Wonders
Our ongoing collaboration with the Prep buddies continues to foster wonderful connections and creative projects.
Mini-Metropolis Marvels
At the end of Term 3, the buddies teamed up to decorate and construct various houses, pooling their creative resources to build a small mini-metropolis. The Preps were brilliant, eagerly sharing their emerging knowledge of building materials and construction methods, guiding their Year 5 friends to create a fantastic architectural display!
Ingenuity Beneath the Waves
More recently this term, our buddies rejoined us for a session filled with boundless ingenuity and fun as we collaborated to create a spectacular array of underwater creatures.
From fantastical fish to mesmerising marine invertebrates, the students’ imaginations ran wild, resulting in a truly unique and vibrant oceanic display!
Curriculum Corner: Learning Highlights
Literacy: Poetic Prowess
Following the holidays, we dove straight into writing holiday recounts. This task served as a perfect springboard to remind students about the power of figurative language. We explored similes metaphors and personification, which were then artfully employed to craft some truly stunning and evocative poetry.
Numeracy: Deep Dive into Capacity
In Mathematics, our focus has been on the concept of Capacity. Students have been engaging in fun activities, exploring units and problem-solving to gain a concrete understanding of how much liquids or materials a container can hold.
Unit of Inquiry: Ecosystems in Flux
We have eagerly unpacked our new Unit of Inquiry centred around the powerful idea: Significant events effect the balance of an ecosystem.
This compelling unit began by exploring different global climates and the incredible adaptations that animals must develop to survive and thrive within them. The students have used this knowledge to engage in a highly creative project: designing their own unusual-looking animals and then robustly discussing and justifying the specific adaptations that allow their unique creatures to survive in their created or chosen climate. The resulting creatures have been imaginative, hilarious and scientifically sound!
