Year 6 News

Leading into our final term for the year, the ever-busy Year 6s jumped straight back into the workload. The Year 6 teachers are excited to help the students finish the year and their primary school journey.

Inquiry -Exhibition

On the 28th of October, Year 6 will be presenting their exhibitions, that they have spent the past month researching and creating, to all their parents. On the 29th they will present it to the whole school.

The Year 6s started their journey by choosing a world issue and picking a specific topic from that issue. Then they researched all about their topic down to all the little details. We made our own lines of inquiry, and started designing broachers, we made PowerPoints to present all our information and Posters to hang and spread awareness. Our transdisciplinary theme Sharing the Planet and our Central Idea is ‘exploration of passions and interests can inspire actions to contribute to a better world’.

On Thursday 9th October, World Vision Australia came to educate the grade 6’s on some global issues for our exhibition. We wrote a letter to a professional who focuses our topics, and two groups wrote to World Vision Australia. One group’s topic was Child Labour, and the other was World Hunger/Famine. Louisa from World Vision kindly offered to visit us in person. World Vision showed us a presentation on global issues. After the presentation three groups, two Child Labour and one World Hunger, had an interview with Louisa. It was a great experience, and we all learnt a lot.

On Thursday World vision came into the year 6 great space to answer questions about world hunger and child labour. Luiza came out to answer the questions. The reason why she came out was because of our upcoming exhibition which is about global issues and how we can fix them. We asked questions about how they help people in child labour and also how they help starving people. By the end we had asked all our questions and got all the answers we wanted.

The Year 6's will be hosting our PYP exhibition on Wednesday 29th of October.  Our global issue is World Hunger.  The action we are taking on our issue is that we will be collecting food to donate to those Australians in need.  We have contacted Food Harvest.  They are an organisation that helps distribute food to those in need.  At our stall we will have a collection box where you can donate dry goods such as cans of food or rice and pasta.   We would love if you could support us by bringing in a can of food or some dry goods.  Please make sure it is within the use by date.

Thank you for your support.

Numeracy

Using our prior knowledge of decimals and fractions, the students have been exploring the possible outcomes of chance experiments and observe the changes in outcomes as the sample size increases, using fractions, decimals and percentages. The students thoroughly enjoyed the hands-on trials with coin flipping, dice rolling and pulling cards out of a random pile.
