Learning Specialists  @ Glenroy

Learning Specialists are highly skilled classroom practitioners whose role involves building practice excellence across the school through the teaching of demonstration lessons, observing and providing feedback to colleagues, and designing and facilitating school-based professional learning with an underpinning constant focus on the improvement of student learning outcomes. All Learning Specialists at Glenroy College share responsibility for building teacher capacity through coaching and mentoring, and facilitation of school-based professional learning, with a focus on building excellence in teaching and learning practice, SWPBS and curriculum building, design and implementation.

Learning Specialist – Teaching and Learning

Role: The Learning Specialist – Teaching and Learning provides pedagogical leadership to strengthen teaching quality and student outcomes across the college. This role focuses on embedding the school’s instructional model and Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum, and ensuring consistency and excellence in classroom practice. The position leads professional learning, coaching, and curriculum development, using evidence and data to guide improvement. Through modelling best practice, mentoring staff, and promoting innovative and reflective teaching, the role supports a culture of continuous improvement and high expectations for all learners.

Responsibilities include but are not restricted to the following: 

  • Model exemplary teaching and learning practice, using student data to inform evidence-based programs and curriculum.

  • Provide pedagogical leadership across the college through planning teams, domain meetings, coaching, and professional learning.

  • Collaborate with the leadership team to define and promote highly effective teaching, learning, and curriculum design.

  • Embed, review, and refine the instructional model and Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum.

  • Lead and model whole-school improvement strategies in curriculum planning, assessment, and delivery.

  • Design and facilitate professional learning for staff at small-group, domain, and whole-school levels.

  • Support teams to develop high-quality teaching resources and programs for specific cohorts.

  • Lead learning walks, classroom observations, and feedback processes that build reflective and collaborative teacher practice.

  • Mentor and coach leaders and teachers to strengthen instructional practice and curriculum implementation.

  • Lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of curriculum programs across all year levels.

  • Analyse student achievement data to inform instructional practice and measure impact.

  • Coordinate assessment, moderation, and reporting processes to ensure consistency and rigour.

  • Promote innovative and evidence-based teaching strategies, including digital and inquiry-based learning.

  • Support early career teachers with curriculum planning, pedagogy, and classroom practice.

  • Contribute to school policy and planning related to teaching, learning, and assessment.

  • Monitor and evaluate the impact of teaching and learning initiatives on student growth and engagement.

Learning Specialist – Literacy and Staff Development

Role The Learning Specialist – Literacy and Staff Development leads the implementation, review, and continuous improvement of the whole-school Literacy Plan, supporting teachers to embed effective literacy practices across all curriculum areas. This role recognises that strong literacy skills are essential for student success in every subject and focuses on building staff capacity through coaching, mentoring, and professional learning. In addition, the role oversees staff induction, supports early career and pre-service teachers, and leads professional development initiatives that enhance teacher practice and foster a culture of collaboration and continual growth across the college.

  • Modelling exemplary teaching and learning practice, including use of student data to inform evidence-based program and curriculum teaching practices

  • Modelling agreed school-wide practices and pedagogical leadership across all aspects of the college including planning teams, domain meetings, professional learning, coaching and mentoring

  • Working with the leadership team to develop a shared view of highly effective teacher practice and curriculum design

  • Embed, review and refine the consistent implementation of the instructional model and Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum

  • Leading and modelling the implementation of whole-school improvement strategies related to curriculum planning and delivery

  • Design and facilitation of professional learning at small group, domain-based and whole-school level 

  • Provide advice and support to teams developing resources for specific cohorts and purposes 

  • Play a lead role in implementing processes and protocols for observation and feedback of teacher practice and peer collaboration. This includes supporting teachers to seek, analyse and act on improving their practice.

  • Providing ongoing mentoring and coaching of teachers, with a focus on literacy practice throughout the college, context-specific resource development, and differentiation

  • Development, implementation, regular review and refinement of the Glenroy College Whole School Literacy Plan

  • Continue to embed the 3L course in teacher practice across all Domains

  • Lead the implementation, development and monitoring of evidence-based Literacy intervention programs

  • Oversee induction of new staff into the school

  • Support and mentor early career teachers

  • Monitor and support VIT registration and compliance

  • Coordinate Student Teacher placements with universities, and manage student teachers during their placements

  • Coordinate the work of the RMIT Professional Learning Hub @ Glenroy College

  • Other duties as required by the Principal

Learning Specialist – Numeracy and Enrichment

Role: The Learning Specialist – Numeracy and Enrichment is responsible for leading the implementation, review, and refinement of the whole-school Numeracy Plan, supporting teachers to embed effective numeracy practices across all learning areas. This role reflects the college’s belief that growth across all disciplines is strengthened by a consistent and evidence-based approach to numeracy teaching. In addition, the role involves planning, coordinating, and delivering enrichment programs that extend student learning and engagement, and liaising with external organisations to provide enhanced academic opportunities for students.

  • Mentor and coach teachers with a focus on Numeracy, differentiation, and context-specific resource development.

  • Develop, implement, and regularly review the Whole School Numeracy Plan.

  • Lead evidence-based intervention programs, including Getting Ready in Numeracy (GRIN).

  • Liaise with external partners including CHES, SCOE, and RMIT Women in STEM.

  • Coordinate student participation in external competitions, workshops, and programs (e.g., Maths & Digitech Olympics, Science Faire, Westpac Maths Competition, Ethics Olympiad, National Science Competition).

  • Oversee the DET Student Excellence Program.

  • Work with staff to create opportunities for student mentor programs.

  • Collaborate with DE representatives on the Merri-bek North Education Plan initiatives.

  • Undertake other duties as required by the Principal Team
