In The Artroom

This week in the Artroom students continued the artist study of Romero Britto a modern  “Pop” artist. They continued to view and discuss his artwork and the main elements whilst designing a Britto inspired piece of their own. Gr 3-6 have used watercolour and acrylic paints to create layers to their artwork and next week will use Sharpies and Paint Markers to add the detailed patterns and thick bold black lines. Students will be continuing this artist study for the next few weeks with them using different art mediums to create artwork inspired by Britto.

Photos of artwork will be placed on our school’s Facebook page.

The Cavendish Fleece and Flower Show is coming up on the first weekend in November, some students have given Ms Brown their art entries already.

Ms Brown will be holding special art workshops each Wednesday lunchtime. There is a list on the double glass doors for next Wednesday’s workshop How to draw a LAVA LAMP using chalk pastels. There are only 12 spots for gr 3-6 so make sure you write your name on the list if you’re interested.

Artist of the week awards go to:

  • Rosie Tcheng
  • William Curren
  • 3/4C

Well done to everyone on a great week of creating Britto inspired artwork!

MUSIC NEWS

Hello everyone,

Last week we had the privilege of a visit from El Camino, a South American music group. In the weeks leading up to the visit, most classes learned about South American music and instruments in general, as well as the specific songs that the group presented. We learned to sing the chorus of “Don’t take away our burger” in Spanish, with actions, which impressed our visitors when we joined in with them!

It was a great interactive performance. Mrs Riddle and some students were invited up the front to perform a traditional ‘tinku’ (dance), and everyone joined in clapping rhythm patterns along with the cajon at certain times in songs. There were lots of questions asked of the performers, and some students came out determined that South American music is their favourite cultural music. Even though it was the 3/4s Recovery Day after camp, a few 3/4s came to school specifically to watch the concert, and reported afterwards that it was worth it.

In Music classes we are now starting to prepare for our end of year performance items, as well as working on our usual learning program.

Kind regards,

Mrs Garland

STEM Week 1, 2 & 3

Week 1

Preps and grade 1/2s started the term off by listening to the text, The Very Hungry Caterpillar. They then got to create their very own growing caterpillars.

Grades 3-6 started their term off by using provided materials to each make their own desktop basketball hoop.

Week 2

Preps this week started to explore movement. They learnt about different ways humans and animals move.

Grade 1/2s this week started to explore forces. They played a game with balloons to discuss the forces of push or pull.

Grade 5/6s had two STEM lessons this week. In the first lesson, they looked at symbols used in electrical circuits. Their next lesson they completed some rotational STEM challenge activities.

Week 3

Preps continued to explore movement, this time for objects. They analysed whether certain objects bounced, spun, slid and rolled.

Grade 1/2s completed some rotational STEM challenge activities.

Grade 3/4s had two STEM lessons this week. In their first lesson, they used problem-solving skills to solve a crossword related to their new topic for the term – heat. In the second lesson, they explored friction as a heat source and completed an investigation to observe the changes to a wooden block after rubbing it against four different items.
