Learning in Year 1

What a busy start to Term 4. We have had so many wonderful experiences both within our level and as a whole school.
Firstly, congratulations to all our wonderful actors during their very first school production of Shrek the Musical. All the practise paid off, seeing them all shine in front of a packed out audience.
Last week, we had so much fun in the Colour Run and laughed as our very own Miss B got covered in slime. Thank you to all the effort you made in raising money.
Literacy
During the first few weeks of Term 4, we have been focusing on the structure of a recount. To support our writing, we have engaged in some shared experiences of a teddy bears picnic and scavenger hunt. We have developed our skills in writing an introduction, sequence of events and conclusion. Using the four w's has helped us immensely - who, what, where and when.
We are now building our skills in convincing through our persuasive unit. Watch out, your child might start trying to change your mind with some great reasons at home!
Math
We began the term with data, where we developed our questioning skills from a yes/no question to one that had multiple answers. We used both observational (looking at things) and surveys (asking questions) to collect data. It was lots of fun asking our friends questions! We then transferred our answers into a graph so we could discuss and make conclusions about our data.
Next, we learnt how to give and follow directions. We played robots and some of us even had a go with Indie cars to build our vocabulary of 'forwards, backwards, left and right'. It was very important for us to listen carefully and follow the exact instructions. You might want to play this fun game at home!
This week, we are exploring time. This includes days of the week, months of the year and o'clock on an analogue clock. We all discovered an amazing fact - did you know, it takes 365 days and 6 hours for the earth to go around the sun each year. This has helped us to make a connection as to why there is a leap year every 4 years!!
Integrated
Our integrated unit, 'Mini Makers' has begun! We are using our senses to explore different materials and their features. We have learnt the scientific words to help us explain the different features, such as - flexible, rigid, transparent, opaque, waterproof, hard, soft, strong, weak, heavy, light, sink and float. This will be a great help when we design and create our own solution to a problem later this term. You can help us by looking at different objects and asking what materials were used to make the object and why we think these materials were used.
