Student Action Teams: Building Student Voice and Leadership at Great Ryrie
We are excited to share that our Student Action Teams are officially underway at Great Ryrie Primary School! Earlier this week, our future student leaders took part in the first half-day training session with Kate Wilde from The Human Development Workshop and Miss Atkinson and Mrs Maxwell,
This program is part of our ongoing commitment to strengthening student voice, agency and leadership at Great Ryrie. It provides students with real opportunities to share their ideas, take meaningful action, and make a difference within our school community.
What Are Student Action Teams?
Student Action Teams are based on the belief that:
- Students can make important decisions about issues that matter to them.
- Students have the skills, expertise and knowledge to improve their school and community.
- Meaningful action can be part of everyday learning.
By participating, students learn teamwork, problem-solving, communication and leadership — all while developing practical action plans to make positive change at school.
Our First Training Day
During the first training session, students:
- Took part in team-building and leadership activities.
- Explored what it means to lead and listen to others.
- Began brainstorming potential projects and actions to improve our school.
- Reflected on how they can make a real difference as young leaders.
We were so impressed by the enthusiasm, creativity and maturity our students showed. They are already demonstrating what it means to be thoughtful, collaborative leaders.
What’s Next?
The second half-day training will take place in a few weeks, where students will continue developing their Action Plans — setting goals, assigning roles and planning how to bring their ideas to life.
Following training, our Student Action Teams will meet regularly to put their plans into action, communicate with staff, and reflect on their progress.
Why It Matters
Programs like this empower students to see that their voices count. Research shows that when students are given genuine opportunities to lead, they become more engaged, resilient and connected to their school community. We are proud to be nurturing these leadership skills at Great Ryrie and can’t wait to see the amazing ideas our students bring forward.
We look forward to sharing updates after our next training session and showcasing the exciting student-led projects that will emerge from this initiative. Thank you for supporting our young leaders as they take action to make Great Ryrie an even better place to learn and grow.
Student Eyecare Program - Register for Free Comprehensive Eye Examination at GRPS
We are pleased to announce that the Student Eyecare Program will be running at the school in Term 4, 2025. An optometrist will be onsite during school hours to provide students with a free comprehensive eye examination that is covered through Medicare Australia. 1 in 6 students have eye conditions that go undetected. This is due to the high level of visual demand on their eyes from books, laptops, tablets and smartphones. Every student will receive a full report about their eye health and a prescription will be provided if glasses are required. The prescription can be taken to any optical store to get the glasses made. Don’t miss out on this wonderful opportunity. To sign up, register online at: https://forms.gle/te5MbQzX4xhjNQMZ7
