Auslan Report

In our final fortnight for the term in Auslan, Grade Preps will be doing revision. Grades 1-6 students will learn about Constructed Action/Role Shift and do revision. When Grade Preps do revision to consolidate their learning for the term, the activity will involve practicing the poem ‘When I meet a Deaf Person.’ Students will also work in pairs and practice meeting/greeting each other and signing ‘Hello, how are you?’ Grade Preps will select a topic that they enjoyed during the term e.g. Sea Animals or Feelings, to practise with a partner.

When learning about Constructed Action/Role Shift, Grade 1-2 students will work on a conversation between two classroom friends. To begin, students will practise by starting with a conversation between two students at the front of the group. This conversation will include the greeting signs and response signs. For example: ‘hello’, ‘good morning', ‘how are you?’ and ‘How are you feeling?’ Other students will respond with ‘good’, ‘happy’, ‘sad’ or ‘tired’ Students will then work in pairs and practise role shifting which is where the Auslan person signing takes on the role of two people. Grade 3-4 students will do a similar activity with the focus on the role shift referring to family members. For example: mum and dad. The conversation will continue with ‘what would you like for breakfast?’ This will encourage students to refer to their breakfast signs previously learnt. Grade 5-6 students will do role shifting with a partner but with the focus on sports signs and greetings.

Revision for Grade 1-2 students will involve creating aMy Story. Students will need to provide some information about themselves, for example: their name (by fingerspelling), age, family, pets or hobbies/sports. Students will create these simple and short stories in Auslan to share with the class. Grade 3-6 students will extend their learning by adding events in their stories for example, a time that they may have injured themselves. All revision lessons will involve looking at short videos that include stories from deaf presenters and teh importance of deaf culture.

As our students build their repertoire of words, engage in conversations and enjoy practising signs together as learnt by our students! Please scan the QR Code below which will provide you with YouTube videos to assist in practising together at home.
