Rest in the Season of Kudlila

"Be still, and know that I am God." – Psalm 46:10

Winter, often seen as a time of stillness and retreat, invites us to slow down, rest, and listen. For the Kaurna people, Kudlila is the winter season—a time marked by rain and the replenishing of waterholes, cool winds, and the resting of country. It is not merely cold and barren, but a vital part of the natural cycle—a time when the land is nourished in quietness, preparing for the burst of life in coming seasons.

In our lives, we too encounter "winter" seasons—times of waiting, of stillness, even of sorrow. Yet Scripture reminds us that even in those quiet, cold months of the soul, God is present. Winter is not the absence of growth but the hidden preparation for it.

Just as the rain of Kudlila replenishes the land, God's Spirit renews us in times of rest. In stillness, we make space to hear God's voice. In retreat, we find spiritual renewal. The land rests—and so should we.

Prayer:

Creator God,

Thank You for the gift of seasons, both in the land and in our hearts. As the rains of Kudlila fall, may we find rest and renewal in you. Teach us to be still and to know you are near, even in the quiet seasons. May we, like the land, be prepared for what You are growing within us.

Amen.

Spend a few minutes today in stillness. Look at the sky, feel the cool air, and give thanks for God’s presence in every season—especially in the quiet and restful ones.
