Soul Sonics Music Incursion

On Thursday, 19th June, 24 students in Year’s 5 and 6 participated in the Soul Sonics Music and Multimedia productions workshop. Our session was led by Jason, or DJ Sizzle, who has travelled around the world with other leading musical artists.

We started off learning about the hardware and software that we were using to compose music into loops. Students recorded sounds from their surroundings and used these to make music through contemporary production processes and production tools used widely in the music and creative industries such as film, TV, gaming, podcasting and the creation of content for social media.

They used the field recordings and added them to the sound pallet. They selected sounds that could be melodic sounds, percussion sounds and interesting sounds. They placed then into the beat sequence, organising sounds into a sequence. The beat division is 1e&a2e&a3e&a4e&a. From here students put a middle sound on beats 2 and 4, a bass sound on beat 1 and a high sound on the beats they wanted to highlight.

The students worked incredibly well together and made some cool loops and music. Safe to say everyone had lots of fun recording and using their sounds to create music. Such a powerful incursion that gives students the opportunity to grow and change the music industry in the future.

Drama Victoria Incursion

On Wednesday, 25th June, students in year 3-6 participated in Drama Victoria extension program focusing on Empathy and Communication. The session started with looking at creating statues starting individually, then small groups then 2 big groups and everyone.  We discussed what Empathy and Communication are and why they are important.

The students played a game of physical whispers, they were given a movement and had to pass the movement down the line and see how it changes, exploring how movement not just our voices can affect how we communicate with others. We used mime to try and communicate our favourite food and song and our partners had to guess. It was very challenging as some songs lyrics are long.

We went on an emotional walk around the room using slow motion and freezes and quick walks, we then added different emotions and interacted with one another in that emotion.  It was a funny experience but a shared one having the same emotions at the same time.  We finished the session creating a scene or freeze frame that showed different emotions such as disgust, fear, excitement. Some groups went abstract and created different things that they were disgusted by and some that went with a theme of a party where everyone was excited. It was a fantastic way to gain skills and work on different ways to communicate and show how empathy is important in creating relationships with others.  We look forward to having Drama Victoria back next year.

Annie

On Wednesday, 10th July some of the families at Oakleigh Primary School went to watch Annie the musical. This was a fantastic community event.

Annie is set in New York in 1933 during the Great Depression, Annie brings to life the adventures of an eleven-year-old red-haired orphan. Annie lives in an orphanage run by the ruthless Miss Hannigan. When Annie is invited to spend Christmas at Oliver Warbucks’ mansion, a bond develops between them. The grumpy billionaire is ultimately transformed by the lovable and optimistic orphan as he attempts to help Annie find her real parents.

The show had wonderful choreography and incredible voices.  We were lucky to see Anthony Warlow as Oliver Warbucks, Greg Page and President Franklin D. Roosevelt.  Some of the students even knew the girls in the orphanage.

What a successful show and lots of fun had by all.  Looking forward to the next Musical, Anastasia on Wednesday 21st August. Details to follow on Compass.

Emergency Services visit

Our Grade 1 students were visited by the emergency services to introduce them to the important roles that members of our community make. They talked about how their role in the community is to help. See some photos of the Police and Ambulance visits.

Australian Ballet

Our students enjoyed some amazing performances from the Australian Ballet.
