Our hardworking Grade 5 and 6 students have been putting in tremendous effort all term, and they are thrilled to showcase their talents in a special performance for the school community!
Each class will perform a song they have chosen and practiced together. Some students have even choreographed their own dances to go along with the music.
It's a celebration of creativity, collaboration, and fun!
Parents and family are invited to come along.
Looking forward to seeing you there!
Welcome to IPS
From time to time it's important to revisit those norms and behaviours that we all should subscribe to, even when it sounds like we are being told the obvious. So the following thinking addresses the importance of traffic safety around schools, and why it matters.
Keeping Our Kids Safe
The Importance of Traffic Safety Around Schools.
As the school community continues to grow, so too does the volume of traffic around our school during drop-off and pick-up times.
Ensuring the safety of our students, families, and staff is a shared responsibility—and it begins with awareness and action in the school zone.
Why It Matters
Children are among the most vulnerable road users. Their smaller size, developing judgment, and unpredictable behaviour make them especially at risk in high-traffic areas. According to road safety experts, school zones are one of the most critical areas to maintain low speeds and high vigilance.
Even a small lapse in attention—texting while driving, failing to stop at crossings, or parking illegally—can have serious consequences. These moments can be life-changing not just for the student involved, but for the driver, their family, and the wider school community.
Simple Actions, Big Impact
To help keep our school zone safe, we encourage everyone to follow these key guidelines:
Observe the speed limit: Most school zones have a reduced speed limit during key hours. Slowing down gives you more time to react.
Use designated drop-off zones: These areas are designed for quick, safe access to the school. Avoid stopping in no-parking zones or across driveways. Don't leave your vehicle in Kiss n Go Zones!
Follow the directions of crossing supervisors: They are there to protect children—please respect their role and stop when asked.
Put phones away: Distraction is a leading cause of accidents. Eyes up, hands on the wheel, and full attention on the road.
Model safe behaviour: Children learn from what they see. Use crossings, walk bikes across roads, and always follow traffic signals.
Working Together
Our school is committed to student safety, but we can’t do it alone. Whether you're walking, riding, or driving, we ask all families to be mindful of their actions and the example they set. If you're running late or in a hurry, remember: no appointment or meeting is more important than a child’s life. It's as simple as that.
Let’s continue to make our school a safe place to learn and grow—starting with the way we move around it.

Wild Action Zoo incursion
This week the Year 5 students enjoyed an exciting and informative visit from the Wild Action Zoo. There was a range of animals from a black headed python to the critically endangered pygmy possum. The photos say it all.
We are excited to work closely with Carlton FC over the coming weeks towards making AFL experiences more accessible to our local community, particularly families that may be new to the game.
Carlton Football Club have made a generous offer to provide two free tickets to all families for their upcoming match against North Melbourne, Round 15 at the MCG, Saturday June 21st (starting at 1:20pm).
Families can claim their two free tickets via the below link:
I’m pleased to share some exciting news from this week’s interschool chess tournament held at Viewbank Primary School. More than 100 students from 17 schools took part in this competitive event.
IPS was proudly represented by six dedicated chess players: William L, Hendrix G, Edward R, Ciro R G, Luke F, and Steven W.
IPS chess players delivered an outstanding performance, earning a gold medal in the Years 3–4 category and a bronze medal in the Prep–2 category.
Despite having only six players, IPS achieved an impressive 4th place overall, competing strongly against the winning school, which fielded 16 players.
Congratulations to all IPS chess players on their excellent performance.
IPS will be hosting a tounament later in August. Details on the Community Page in this edition of 'Inside Ivanhoe'.

We listened to student voice
We received many suggestions from the JSC and individual students for school improvement and one that came up regularly was the need for a Foundation Sandpit.
One issue was where to put it. The solution was tto install it directly across from The Treehouse, next to one of the new cubbies.
The Facilities Committee of School Council has asked Mr Bull to work with Leo (our wonderful maintenance person) to begin this new project. This will be a wonderful addition to our play facilities. I look forward to seeing this progress over the coming weeks.
Next project. Increased seating around the Year 2 classrooms, but these will be for everybody.
Inclusivity and School Values
At Ivanhoe PS we are committed to equity, excellence and care. We promote a school culture that values diversity and fosters respectful relationships. From time-to-time issues arise in class or at play that we endeavour to approach in a sensitive and caring manner.
This means we demonstrate respect to our peers, our teachers and our parent community. It is important to remember that children do not have to be friends, but they are expected to be polite. Often students have a strong sense of social justice. While they do not always recognise their role in relational conflict (primarily because they are young) they invariably understand logical consequences and expect them to be applied fairly.
As teachers we actively model and teach appropriate behaviours, using evidence informed, strengths-based approaches, to support students to succeed and be happy at school. We expect students to be active participants in their own learning and behaviour choices.
When playground or friendship issues arise, teachers and staff use a positive behaviour approach to try to affect the best outcome for all students. These processes are proven to be beneficial for students in helping them to develop problem solving strategies and resilience. There is no acceptable excuse for being unkind, teasing or undertaking any bullying behaviour.
We seek your cooperation, and request that you regularly speak with your child about our school values and what they mean and look like. IPS is a great school with a great vibe, not by accident but by design. Culture is important and when we work together we get great outcomes.

As we continue to learn to live with COVID-19, keeping our school safe and healthy remains a top priority. One of the most important ways we can protect our students, families, and staff is by staying up to date with COVID-19 vaccinations.
When students and staff are healthy, learning can continue with fewer disruptions. COVID-19 vaccinations help reduce the risk of serious illness and limit the spread of the virus in classrooms, staffrooms, and playgrounds. This is especially important for protecting those in our school community who may be more vulnerable to illness.
We all want our school to be a safe, welcoming place where students can thrive. By keeping up with vaccinations and taking simple health precautions, we can reduce the spread of illness, and support each other through this cold spell.
