Year 5/6

Literacy

Students have been exploring the writing styles of famous authors Andy Griffiths and Oliver Jeffers. They have had the opportunity to read their books and write using a similar style. Students have become immersed in their book club books that explore interesting themes and events. Through discussion and questioning, students have been continually developing their comprehension skills.

Year 6 students are busily working on developing their writing pieces for their 'Time at ARPS' digital story. Year 5 students are creating their 'Passion Project' on the topic of their choice, creating writing pieces from a range of genres.

This will be something that you can celebrate with your child at the end of the year when they bring it home.

Numeracy

Students are improving their ability to solve worded problems. To assist students solve multi-worded problems, we have introduced an easy to follow structure which guides students through the steps of problem solving. This tool is called Newman's Error Analysis and is being used across all of our learning spaces to assist students when working through worded questions.

Students follow the steps of:

1- Reading (Are there any words you don’t understand?)

2- Comprehending (What is the question asking you to find out?)

3- Transformation (What maths are you going to use to get the answer?)

4- Process Skills (Use maths language to explain your thinking)

5- Encoding (What answer did you get?)

6- Reflect (How can you check your answer?)

Students work through each of these steps ensuring that they fully understand what the question is asking before they start the process of working out an answer.

SEL

Students have been exploring the narrative 'Kit and Arlo Find a Way'. This text is an action-packed and relatable fictional chapter book following the journey of upper primary school kids – Kit, Arlo, Harley and Vanya. They develop and explore friendships with plenty of ups and downs, providing opportunities for our students to discuss and learn from the events in the book.
