State Athletics

After taking a strong team of 35 to Ballarat to compete in the Greater Western Region Athletics, 6 students came first in their events, making them eligible to compete at the State Competition at Lakeside Stadium, Albert Park.

The competition was very high standard with 255 schools competing at the event. Monivae came in at 52nd. The athletes should be all very proud of how well they went.

A huge congratulations to Sports Captain Bailey Cooper who came 3rd in his High Jump event after a jump off. He also came 6th in long jump and triple jump.

The other students should be equally proud of their efforts.

  • Grace Cleaver - 4th Hurdles & 7th Triple jump
  • Astrid White - 4th Long jump
  • Molly Barry - 6th shot out, 5th discus and 5th javelin
  • Jess Mibus - 7th discus
  • Noah Burton - 5th shot put

Clay Target Shooting

This week finished off the clay target team training with our final competition on Monday. This is the South West Middle Years Competition in Warrnambool.

Two weeks ago we had our House Shooting Competition and Parent shoot. Ffrench came out victorious in the house shoot. We had 25 parents compete at the parent shoot and many didn’t quite out shoot their child however, we were victorious by a margin. The average for the students was 14.56 and the parents had 14.58.

A huge thank you to Leesa Clark who assisted in the office, Craig Bygate for assisting with coaching, and those parents who consistently scored the training. We couldn’t get all shooters through so quickly.

Super 8’s Cricket – Yr 9/10 Girls

On Tuesday, a talented group of Year 9/10 girls attended the Super 8’s cricket competition at Pedrina Park. Four rounds of Super 8’s cricket were scheduled for the day against Hamilton College, Bayview, Portland Secondary and Good Shepherd. With the weather giving us perfect conditions for cricket we commenced our first game against College. The bowling from the Monivae girls’ team was excellent, but not enough to defeat a strong Hamilton College side.

Our next game was against Bayview and what a close game this was, both batting and bowling was on point but with just 5 runs needed to defeat Bayview, we were unable to come away with the win at the games end. A quick break for lunch and we were onto our third game hoping for a win against Good Shepherd. Good Shepherd put up an extremely strong performance which the girls were unable to beat, but we had one game left to record a win and the girls were finding their groove and ready to bring a strong performance.

Our last game was programmed against Portland who were short of players, however Stella Grinham offered to play for the Portland team to ensure a fair game for all. The girls were full of confidence and ready get the first win of the day and that is exactly what they did, with many 6’s hit for the game and some excellent wicket taking, the girls recorded a big win against the Portland side. Although no finals were played the girls represented Monivae well and displayed wonderful sportsmanship and were competitive all day.

Super 8’s Cricket – Yr 9/10 Girls

On Tuesday 17th October Monivae had 11 eager Year 9/10 boys venture up to Pedrina Park for the annual Super 8 T20 Cricket Carnival. The day consisted of a round-robin carnival, with six schools all playing four games each across the day.

Our first game of the day was against Hamilton and Alexandra College, where we positively started the day winning that game 237 runs to 144. Next up we played against Bayview, which we expected to be our toughest match of the day. This proved to be somewhat correct, as we only managed to make 176 runs, a total that we didn't think would be enough. As it turned out though it was, as Bayview ultimately made a total of 173 meaning we won by three runs. Our third game came against Good Shepherd College, with this match involving a lot of quality batting. In what eventuated into another very close match, we came out on top 205 runs to 203. The equation was simple going into our final match, if we won, we would be the overall winner of the day, and the only team to win all four of their matches. Portland Secondary College batted first and made a respectable 172 runs, this was a total that we thought was very achievable to chase. Unfortunately, we saved our worst batting performance for last, with the boys only managing to make 122 runs, losing by 50 runs.

As a result of this final game loss, the overall winner of the day would be decided by total runs as Monivae, Bayview and Portland Secondary all won three of their four games. Bayview came out on top of this batting aggregate count, scoring a total of 748 runs for the day compared to our 740. Losing overall by only 8 runs was disappointing, however, our boys played some terrific cricket across the day, with some excellent batting, bowling and fielding on display at different stages. Most importantly, the games were all played in the correct spirit, exhibiting plenty of friendly competitiveness.
