READ     GROW     INSPIRE

When we READ we GROW in many ways. Reading helps us to grow by increasing our knowledge, teaching us new skills, and helping us to understand our emotions and feelings and those of others. When we read we are INSPIRED to believe in what can be, who we can be and our imagination soars to places we never thought it could.

Thank you students, teachers and parents for your support.

THE EPIC ADVENTURES OF SID

Where is Sid

Hi everyone, we are all back safely in Australia, Tamworth and home to the library on Monday.

What an adventure.

In Malta last Friday we visited Mdina known as the silent city.

Can you spot me on Mrs McGuirk's shoulder? We are having a guided tour around Mdina in a horse-drawn carriage known as a 'karazzin'. Mdina was once the capital city of Malta, however when they moved the capital to a new location, Valletta,  Mdina became like a ghost town, so now it is also known as the silent city,  because only the inhabitants, all 200 of them, are permitted to have a vehicle within the city walls. It certainly was very quiet.

Here I am sitting on the walls of the Grand Harbour built in the 15thC to keep out the invaders during the Great Siege.

Just below you can see me doing some fishing in a traditional Maltese fishing boat, a 'luzzu'. These boats are always very bright and colourful.

I do love my bookshops. Last week we were wandering around Hamrun and found an old house that had been transformed into a bookshop with an amazing staircase, very cool. Mrs McGuirk and I had lots of fun exploring all the different rooms full of awesome books.

We even bought some books about cats.. really. I looked for some sloth books but they were all sold out. Sloths are very popular in Malta...so they say.

CHOICE = Motivation

"The strongest positive impact on reading engagement and learning gains come from student self-selection of reading materials. When reading materials are selected for students the links to engagement and learning gain decline significantly."

How Reading Motivation and Engagement Enable Reading Achievement: Policy Implications, Ana Taboada Barber and Susan Lutz Klauda

When students visit the library a huge emphasis is placed on the

premise that they have

 CHOICE

in what they can read and borrow.

LIBRARY BAGS MATTER...  Not just some of the time but all of the time.

No food or drink on my books.

Food and drink are for the chooks.

Library bags keep ‘em clean.

Books are cool don’t treat ‘em mean.

Bring your bag every time.

Fill it up and get in line.

Have it scanned and scoot on out.

LIBRARY BAGS

We all shout.
