Biology Field Trip

Article submitted by Emily Howard, Year 11 Biology

On October 5th, the Year 11 Biology class ventured to the mangroves at Holloways Beach Environmental Education Centre (HBEEC) to complete our Unit 3 practicals.

While we were there, we explored the depths of the mangroves to discover and identify different species of mangrove.  We learnt how to identify these different species by examining mainly their roots, bark and leaves. We had played HBEEC’s infamous Escape Room, where the class was tasked to identify mangrove species. It was an entertaining way to put our skills to the test and compete against each other.

With the knowledge we acquired during class time, we also had the opportunity to use many different technological devices to measure biotic and abiotic data. Along with this, we went boating and measured the factors of water quality, where we identified many species of birds in an amusing game of Bird Bingo, along with a fun little croc sighting (sadly only one of the two boating groups were able to see it).

It was an amazing way to end the day and it gave us insight as to what specific factors affect the quality of the water (which will be a bonus for our next unit). Overall, it was a worthwhile experience and one that we will remember in our class for the unit to come.

With special thanks to Emily Howard for this newsletter contribution.
