This term has begun with excitement in the Languages Department.
In Week 1, we welcomed Paul Royes to the Year 9 cohort. Paul is a visiting exchange student from Versailles, Paris who will enjoy a school stay from 22 June to 7 August. The Year 9 French class are excited to have Paul with us, and it has proven to be a fun experience in the classroom with the students practising their interacting skills in French. Mrs Matthews has introduced Paul to Vegemite on Sao Biscuits, Tim Tams, Caramello Koalas and Lamingtons. It is certainly a great opportunity for Paul to visit the College and for cultural exchange. Interestingly, Paul is ecstatic to wear a SPX Uniform, as uniforms are not compulsory attire in French schools. We thank Patrick Cornes and his family for organising the experience.
On Monday Week 3, The Year 8 Chinese language students will participate in a cooking incursion, with Chef Luca Roncari from International Cooking School. He will be teaching our classes how to make Chinese dumplings, called 饺(jiǎo)子(zi), a favourite meal anytime, but especially in the colder, winter weather. We will be posting photos in the upcoming weeks.
The French students will be organising a French Bastille Day Assembly for the College on Wednesday 6 August. We have organised a French accordionist to welcome students that day. Year 8, 9 & 10 language students will be treated to crepes with chocolate or lemon and sugar, to merge our language and cultural studies.
Beginning Saturday 9 August, our HSC Language students will commence the HSC Oral Examinations. These exams are traditionally held outside the HSC timetable and involve our students interacting in a conversational assessment in the language of study, in this case Italian, Spanish and Chinese. We wish Alessio Spillane, Jorge de Membrillera, and Jason Jarrett success with their task. We will pray for them this upcoming week.

Semester 2 Reading Goals & an extended deadline for the Premier’s Reading Challenge
Students are setting new reading goals for Semester 2, with research highlighting goal setting and motivation as key drivers in reading success.
Many students from Years 7 to 9 are now aiming to complete the Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) with news of the extended deadline making this goal more achievable.
We encourage all students to stay focused on their reading goal and to enjoy their reading.
PRC’s NEW deadline is Friday, 19 September (Week 9, Term 3).

Lights, Camera, Pius! Film Festival
Calling all young filmmakers!
The annual Lights Camera Pius! Film Festival is not far away, time to get the phone camera out (did you know that 28 days later was shot on an iPhone?) and your creativity into action during the holidays.
Make a short film, any genre.
It must be PG rated and no longer than 3 minutes, for your chance to see your film up on the Hoyts big screen. There are prizes for different age groups and a lot of fun to be had.
