Principal's Message

Mr Stephen Mahoney

Welcome back to Term 3

A warm welcome back to all of our students and families for Term 3! I hope you had a restful and enjoyable break and are ready for a productive term ahead.

A special message for our Year 12 students

This term is a significant one for our Year 12 students as they've already begun their Trial HSC examinations. This is a critical time, and as a school community, we must all support them. Please ensure your students are getting enough sleep, eating healthy food, and finding time for exercise. Most importantly, offer them your praise and encouragement.

These trial exams are a vital practice run for the actual HSC. I've been incredibly impressed by our Year 12s—their commitment and dedication to not only their own studies but also to supporting each other.

After the exams, I will speak with the students to emphasize the importance of their final weeks of school. This is a crucial time for growth. We'll focus on using feedback effectively, collaborating with classmates, and working closely with teachers to prepare for the final exams.

We will continue to uphold our high standards for attendance, uniform, and conduct right to the very end of the school year. I ask for your support in ensuring your child finishes the year safely and positively.

Any student who fails to meet the College's standards in these final weeks may jeopardize their participation in graduation events, their school reference, or even their HSC. Let's work together to ensure every student finishes the year successfully.

A note for our Year 11 students

While much of our attention is on our Year 12s, I want to take a moment to focus on our Year 11 students as you prepare for your final assessments.

Your final assessments are scheduled for the last two weeks of this term, from Monday, September 15, to Thursday, September 25. This is a crucial time to start planning. I strongly encourage you to create a study timetable and begin your preparations now so you feel fully ready and confident when the time comes.

You will receive your detailed assessment timetable within the next two weeks, giving you plenty of time to plan effectively.

The transition to Year 12: momentum matters

These final Year 11 assessments are more than just tests; they are a vital step in your journey to the HSC. The HSC requires a sustained effort over a two-year period, not just a last-minute sprint. By maintaining strong momentum through Term 3 and into Year 12, you're setting yourself up for success.

Here is my advice to help you make a smooth and successful transition to Year 12:

  • Start Early: Begin your study notes, revision, and assessment preparations early. If you're unsure about how to create effective study notes, don't hesitate to speak with staff in the Learning Centre.

  • Establish a Schedule: Create and stick to a consistent study schedule and a well-organized timetable.

  • Tackle Major Works: For any subject with a major work, start it as early as possible. Don't leave it until the last minute.

  • Utilize School Resources: Make the most of our College's Learning Centre. Engage in collaborative study with your peers both before and after school, and during any study periods you have.

  • Attend Workshops: Take advantage of any HSC masterclasses or workshops offered throughout the year, as these will provide invaluable support.

Your commitment now will make a significant difference in your Year 12 experience. Let's make it a successful one.

Years 7 and 8 assessment block

A new term is well underway, and for our Years 7 and 8 students, this means turning your focus toward your upcoming assessment block. This intensive period of exams and assessments is scheduled to run from Monday, September 1, to Friday, September 12.

This assessment block is a fantastic opportunity for you to showcase the knowledge and skills you've developed so far this year. It's also an excellent chance to practice valuable study habits that will serve you throughout your schooling.

Here are a few tips to help you succeed:

  • Plan Ahead: Use the next few weeks to create a study schedule. Break down your subjects into manageable chunks and set aside dedicated time for revision.

  • Utilize Your Resources: Your teachers are your best resource. Don't hesitate to ask questions in class or seek extra help if you're struggling with a particular topic. The library and other school resources are also available to support your learning.

  • Take Care of Yourself: Remember to balance your study time with rest. Get a good night's sleep, eat nutritious meals, and take short breaks to keep your mind fresh.

We have every confidence in your ability to approach this assessment block with determination and focus. Good luck to all of our students!

Final thoughts: a focus on personal growth

As we move through the term, I'd like to share some final thoughts on what it means to grow as an individual during your time here at St Aloysius College. Our goal is for every student to leave us a better person than when they arrived, equipped not just with knowledge, but with the character to lead a successful and happy life.

The years spent at school are crucial for personal development, and a focus on self-improvement is key. Here are some tips I encourage all students to embrace:

  • Be Willing to Change: Growth starts with an open mind. Be willing to learn from your mistakes and adapt your perspective.

  • Be a Role Model: Lead by example and inspire those around you through your actions and choices.

  • Listen to Others: True wisdom comes from listening more than you speak. Value the perspectives of your peers and teachers.

  • Be Honest: Integrity is the foundation of trust. Be honest with yourself and with others.

  • Take Good Care of Yourself: Prioritize your physical and mental well-being. A healthy mind and body are essential for success.

  • Practice GEM: Remember the principles of Gratitude, Empathy, and Mindfulness. These practices will help you build stronger relationships and a more positive outlook on life.

Improving yourself is a lifelong journey. By embracing these principles, you not only achieve your goals but also build a foundation for a happy and fulfilling future. The lessons learned here at the College will set you on a path to success in all aspects of your life.

Remember always:

“Life is not a competition with others. Life is a competition with yourself—to do your personal best each day and be the best person you can be.”

God Bless and as always up the Sharks !!!
