School Wide Positive Behaviour

Highvale Secondary College is School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) School. SWPBS is a school improvement framework. It helps to improve student behavioural, wellbeing, and academic outcomes. It emphasises prevention-focused activities, while still addressing behaviours that do not align with our College Values when they occur.

Major and Minor Behaviours

As part of the SWPBS framework, we have categorised behaviours that don’t align with our Values into two groups: Minor and Major.

Minor Behaviours are less serious and typically handled by the classroom teacher or staff member present.

Major Behaviours are more serious and require intervention from a Year Level Leader, or member of the College Leadership Team.

Students will now be automatically added to a Wednesday lunchtime detention if they engage in one major behaviour or multiple minor behaviours. Below are lists of the relevant Major and Minor Behaviours. Note some of these come from our School Wide Positive Behaviour Supports initiative from the Department of Education, with some additions and amendments.

Minor Behaviours:Major Behaviours:
  • Cheating/Plagiarism
  • Dress Code Violation
  • Fractional Truancy
  • Inappropriate Language
  • Late to Class
  • Littering
  • Mild Disruption
  • Mobile Phone Confiscation
  • Non-Compliance
  • Physical Contact
  • Property Misuse

  • Absconding
  • Abusive Language
  • Bullying Behaviour
  • Criminal Behaviour
  • Defiance
  • Disruption
  • Forgery/Theft
  • Physical Aggression
  • Property Damage
  • Vaping/Smoking

Families will receive an email via Compass to notify them that their child will be required to attend this detention.

We hope that this new structure will allow us to more consistently and quickly reflect on behaviours and make more positive choices moving forward.

We hope both at home and at school these will create learning opportunities for our students to understand the impact their behavioural choices have on themselves, their peers, and the broader College community.

The SWPBS and Student Management Teams look forward to working with you all in supporting our students to create a positive, safe and supportive learning environment.
