Year 3 News

Reading
In Reading, Year 3 students have been exploring the language features of autobiographies.
They looked closely at how authors tell true stories from their own lives using:
- Personal pronouns like I, me, and my
- Time connectives such as then, after that, and finally to show when things happened
- Past tense words to describe events that already took place
Students enjoyed reading autobiographical texts and identifying these key features, which they were then able to apply to their own autobiographies in Writing.
“In Reading we read autobiographies like ‘The Little Refugee’.” - Nabil 3A
“We read books and wrote the past tense words down.” - Isabelle 3A
Writing
In Writing, Year 3 students began writing the most important story: their own autobiography. It begins with their birth, followed by their early childhood. They then write about the present moment, followed by what they would like to do with their lives in the future. Once they have completed their revising and editing, they are going to publish their works on laptops. The Year 3 students are very excited about telling their tales!

Maths
In Maths, Year 3 students continued to build on their understanding of place value and number lines. They explored how numbers can be partitioned into ones, tens, hundreds and thousands using tools like number expanders and MAB blocks. Students also learned how to add and subtract using a range of strategies, including the split strategy, regrouping, and the use of number lines and MAB blocks to help visualise the process. They practised estimating and positioning numbers on number lines by rounding and ordering them.
It has been great to see their growing confidence and use of mathematical language.

They were amazed to learn how much the climate varies throughout the different regions of Australia. Some areas are home to the rainforests, and others can be quite temperate, with chilly winters, like Melbourne!
They are also looking at what makes Australia special, including the gorgeous landmarks, both natural and manmade. Australia has a lot to celebrate, from Uluru to Luna Park!

Social and Emotional Learning - NAIDOC Week

They reflected on their own strengths and wrote letters to their future selves, thinking about how their current choices might shape the kind of person they want to become. Students also discussed what good decision-making looks like and shared their hopes for the future, including how their actions could positively impact their community and future generations.
It’s inspiring to see students express a strong sense of purpose and a desire to contribute to a better world.

Special Event - Year 3 Inflatable World Excursion
On Friday the 4th of July, the Year 3 students enjoyed an unforgettable excursion to Inflatable World, and what a way it was to finish the term!
The day was filled with energy, laughter, and teamwork, making the trip a perfect mix of fitness and fun.
Upon arrival, students dove straight into the massive inflatables, bouncing, sliding, and climbing. From obstacle courses to giant jumping castles, the excitement never stopped.
Alongside the inflatables, students rotated through a series of activities that kept everyone involved and moving. Students tested their aim in bean bag toss, played strategic games like checkers and snakes and ladders, and got active with rounds of dodgeball and soccer.
It was wonderful to see the Year 3 students supporting one another, showing great sportsmanship, and, most importantly, having an absolute blast.
A huge thank you to all the teachers and ES who supported the excursion. It was the perfect way to wrap up a busy and rewarding term.
