Year 2 News

Reading
This fortnight the Year 2’s have been focusing on the comprehension strategy of making text to text connections. Students have been reading texts and linking these texts to others they may have read, watched or seen before. They discovered that the texts might have similar characters, problems, settings etc. Making these connections helps students analyse texts and encourages critical thinking.
Students read at level texts and practised sharing their text to text connections in their reading groups.
“Our class text was called ‘Pirate party’, it reminded me of the Titanic because it’s also about people on a ship”- Harry 2B
“My book was about birthdays and it reminded me of Bluey celebrating Bingo’s birthday”- Hareem 2B
“In class we read a book called ‘dog overboard’, it reminded of ‘Pig the pug’ books because there’s also a talking dog’- Amira 2B
Writing
This fortnight the Year 2’s have been writing a recount of what they got up to over the holidays and writing about what they did on the weekend. Students have been writing in the past tense using the ‘ed’ suffix they practised in phonics last term. They have learned about writing in chronological order and why it is important when writing a recount. The students have discovered that chronological means writing about the events in the order in which they occurred and therefore have been structuring their work into organised paragraphs.
“I have been enjoying writing about my school holidays, especially writing about going to Bonbeach where I saw a lizard!” - Indianna, 2C
“We were writing about what we did at the weekend, writing in paragraphs and using capital letters and full stops.” - Mahrukh, 2C

Maths
This fortnight in Mathematics, Year 2 students have been focusing on fractions, specifically halves and quarters. Students participated in several activities drawing and identifying the half of a shape then halving it again to make four equal parts. Students put into practise their newfound knowledge by folding different shapes of paper into halves then quarters and labelling it. Year 2 students moved onto recognising half of a group and a quarter of a group. Students used teddy bears, blocks and other materials in class to share among a group. For example, students might be asked to share 8 teddy bears equally between 4 groups.
“I got to make a group of 16 teddy bears and put them into 4 equal groups, which is quarters”- Charlotte 2B
“In maths, we used teddy bears, I put the 12 teddy bears into two groups then 4”- Hamza 2B
“I drew a square then coloured in half”- Talal 2B
Inquiry
Year 2 Cohort will be exploring living and non living things during Term 3. Students started off the term by listing as many living and non living things in their Inquiry books. They had discussions about what makes a thing living or non living. Next they predicted what living and non living things they would come across outside in the yard. After that, students explored the school grounds to observe and add more items to their chart.
Additionally, the students have been looking at animal habitats, focussing on sea, land and farm animals and why their habitat is important for survival. The Year 2 students have had the opportunity to research the most interesting animals in those habitats and the weirdest animals on Earth.
“I have liked learning about the sea, land and farm animals. I enjoyed researching on the laptops when Lucy and I were learning about seahorses.” - Ava, 2C
“I had fun using the laptops and writing facts about where our favourite animals live because we are learning about habitats. Habitats are where animals live, it is their home.” - Nawaab, 2C
“I liked making a table to name different types of animals because of where they live, like the farm, sea or land”- Ahri 2B
Auslan
The Year 2’s have revisited Auslan topics from Term 2. Students signed animals and their features by practicing the song Five Little Ducks. While they practise Auslan the expectation is that students do not use their voices and only sign with their hands. The year 2’s also practised numbers from 0-20. After learning the signs for the numbers students played Buzz.
Social and Emotional Learning
This fortnight the Year 2’s have been revisiting classroom expectations. Students had discussions about following rules like being on time, paying attention, and finishing work quickly. These all help keep the class running smoothly and allow everyone more time to learn. Having clear routines makes students feel safe and organised, so they can focus better and join in with confidence.
“In our class, we show whole body listening on the floor”- Alyssa 2B
“You can be kind by listening to others”- Taha 2B
“It’s important to be patient and wait your turn in a game or activity”- Ahri 2B
“We line up quietly in our safety line when the music goes”- Hugo 2B
Special Event
NAIDOC WEEK 2025
Year 2 students participated in NAIDOC Week activities by listening to a Dreamtime story written by award-winning storytellers Kirli Saunders and Dub Leffler. The students were immersed in the love and respect for Country that the story portrayed. After listening to the story, students discussed their favourite places in nature and drew pictures of themselves and the people they love enjoying and embracing our beautiful country.
