Foundation News

Reading
At the start of Term 3, Foundation students have progressed from reading CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words to exploring more complex CVCC (Consonant-vowel, consonant- consonant ) words. They have been learning to segment and blend CVCC words while reading simple texts. Students explored how to break words into individual sounds, using examples such as jump, bird, mint, and went, and practised saying each sound to support their decoding skills. They were also encouraged to blend sounds to read unfamiliar words like pink, burn, and hint. Through guided activities and shared reading, students listened closely to each sound and applied this skill when reading independently. The Foundation cohort is continuing to build confidence in these strategies to support fluency and comprehension.

Writing
This fortnight in Writing, Foundation students have been focusing on narrative writing. They have been identifying the characters, setting, problem, and solution in a variety of texts read in class. The Foundation Cohort read many fun books such as Goldilocks and The Gruffalo and then described the narrative parts of each story in their writing books. Students continued to practise their writing skills, saying each sound as they write new words.

Maths
In the first week back of Term 3, Foundation students continued learning about place value. They made and represented the value of numbers between 1 and 20 using counters and icy pole sticks. Students worked collaboratively with a partner as they selected random cards and read them to one another for their partners to represent using a variety of materials. Foundation students have also been familiarising themselves with reading numbers in their word form to expand our mathematics vocabulary!

Inquiry
Foundation students began their inquiry by exploring Living and Non-Living things. They investigated the differences between the two and learned about the essential needs of living things for survival, including food, water, air and shelter. To deepen their understanding, students examined the specific needs of various animals and created their own animals using playdough, reflecting on what each animal requires to thrive.

Auslan
This fortnight in Auslan, the Foundation students reviewed the signs they learned from Term 2. Students had the opportunity to watch the signs first without listening to the words and figure out what the signs meant. They then attempted repeating the signs after listening to their corresponding words. Foundation students also learned a new song to sign in Auslan, Five Little Ducks!

Social and Emotional Learning
Over the past two weeks in Social and Emotional Learning, students have been exploring the significance of NAIDOC Week. Meanwhile, Foundation students joyfully marked their 100th day of school with a vibrant glow-in-the-dark celebration, embracing the “100 Days Brighter” theme.

In celebration of 100 days of school, Foundation students spent the day completing 100 missions! Students participated in activities such as making a monster with 10 googly eyes, 10 hands, 10 feet and many more until they reached 100. The Foundation cohort has a blast dancing to music with their friends across all the Foundation classes. Students also witnessed the beautiful 100 Days of School posters each class from the school has created as they held them up during the assembly. Way to go Foundation students!
