Specialist Happenings

Visual Arts

The Royal Brighton Yacht Club has invited us to take part in their 150th birthday celebrations by decorating a real sail that will be used for a 'sail past' event for the opening of the 2025 sailing season on October 4th. In a whole school art project, the students and staff will be creating a 'Superhero of the Future Oceans' drawing in a rainbow of bubbles, Yayoi Kusama style. We have begun the planning, with students sharing their ideas and designing their creature....

Some classes have started decorating their own bubble on the sail with sharpies in a monotone style, learning about light, medium and dark tone.

Stay tuned for more progress over the coming weeks.

Love Art!

Mandarin

This week, our Grade 3/4 students have started an exciting new topic—telling time in Chinese! They began learning how to read and say the hour in Mandarin, such as 一点 (1 o’clock), 两点 (2 o’clock), and so on.

To help reinforce their learning, students had lots of fun practising with their peers through interactive flashcard games. These games encouraged speaking, listening, and quick thinking—all while building confidence in using time-related language.

It’s been fantastic to see their enthusiasm and teamwork as they begin this new unit. We look forward to seeing them apply their time-telling skills in everyday sentences very soon!

Great job, Grade 3/4!

This week, our Grade 5/6 students had a fun and interactive way to revise vocabulary from last term—by playing a game of Snakes and Ladders with a Mandarin twist!

To take a turn in the game, students had to read out a Chinese word aloud and explain its meaning in English. This playful activity helped reinforce their memory of key vocabulary while building confidence in both spoken Mandarin and word recognition.

It was fantastic to see students engaged, collaborating, and supporting each other—all while having fun and practising their language skills.

Well done, Grade 5/6, for making learning both meaningful and enjoyable!

You are all amazing!

Physical Education

Foundation – Year 2

Students in Foundation to Year 2 have kicked off Term 2 with a new focus on striking and fielding skills. Our main emphasis, to begin with, has been on the two-handed sidearm strike. This week, we broke down the skill and practised using teeball tees. We wrapped up our lessons with energetic games of modified teeball, giving students the chance to enjoy both striking and fielding in action.

Years 4–6 House Athletics Carnival

Students in Years 4 to 6 had a fantastic day at the House Athletics Carnival! With perfect weather and high spirits, everyone took part enthusiastically in the track events (100m, 200m, 800m and hurdles) and field events (discus, shot put, triple jump, long jump and high jump). Many students earned ribbons for their efforts, while others impressed us with their determination and sportsmanship.

Congratulations to Waratah House, our winning team of the day!

The day finished on a high note with the much-anticipated Teachers vs House Captains 4 × 100m relay. It was a tightly contested race, but with Mr Miller powering through the final leg, the teachers claimed victory!

A huge thank you to our amazing parent volunteers and dedicated staff; your support made the day possible!

Science

Foundation

Our youngest scientists have continued learning about space. We looked at shadows and how they can be created by the sun.

Level 1 & 2s

Level 1s and 2s really enjoyed learning about how craters are formed on Earth and on the Moon. We looked at the splash created by water balloons, which look similar to the rays created by meteorites. We then looked at items dropping into flour and cocoa, thinking about the crater, the walls and rim.

Level 3 & 4s

Level 3 and 4 have studied 'where the water goes' from our homes. They studied the guttering and pipes and that this water, plus our street gutters, go straight to Port Phillip Bay. They also studied the problems created when litter gets into our oceans.

Level 5 & 6s

Our Level 5s and 6s have learnt about the natural disasters caused by the movement of the tectonic plates. We focussed on earthquakes and the damage they cause. We are very excited to be starting our earthquake challenge, where the students are aiming to build an earthquake proof tower.
