STEM News

Hello fellow scientists,
The STEM team would like to welcome everyone back to school! We are excited for a fantastic Term 3 filled with new learning, hands-on investigations, and fun experiments. Let us get ready to explore, discover, and create together!
Our Prep students have been busy identifying objects that are smooth and rough. They have come up with some great examples, including watermelon skin, a slide, a rock, and rope, just to name a few! Students then completed their worksheets independently, demonstrating their understanding of these different textures. Grade 1 students have been investigating how toys use the forces of push and pull. They explored games such as bowling, dominoes, marbles, toy cars, a fishing game, and puzzles, identifying which ones involve pushing or pulling.Working in groups, students took turns and shared their ideas as they discovered how forces make toys move.
In Grade 2, students have been exploring how humans change as they grow. They identified and named the life stages of a human: baby, toddler, child, teenager, adult, and elderly. In small groups of 3 or 4, students acted out each life stage, bringing the human journey to life through role play.
Grade 3 students have been learning to identify the difference between living, once living, and non-living things. Using a picture, they examined various objects and recorded their findings in a table—sorting each item as living, once living, or non-living.This activity helped students build their understanding of how to classify things in the world around them. In Grade 4, students are learning about the life cycle of marsupials. They drew detailed diagrams showing each stage of a marsupial’s life cycle and made predictions about the purpose of the pouch lining—exploring how it helps protect and support the young. Grade 5 students have been learning to classify objects as solids, liquids, or gases. Working collaboratively, they sorted different objects and recorded them under the correct headings in a table. This activity helped students deepen their understanding of the three states of matter through discussion and teamwork. Grade 6 students have been learning about how volcanoes can affect Earth’s surface. They explored the negative impacts of volcanic eruptions and then took on the challenge of answering the question: Are volcanoes creators? Students justified their responses using evidence, showing their ability to think critically about both the destructive and constructive forces of nature.
