VCES Event: Creating Characters with Leigh Hobbs (year 4)
On Tuesday, 25th June, a group of lucky Grade 4 students had the exciting opportunity to take part in the VCES (Victorian Challenge and Enrichment Series) event – Creating Characters: Drawing with Leigh Hobbs.
Leigh Hobbs, the beloved Australian author and illustrator behind favourites like Old Tom, Horrible Harriet, and Mr Chicken, led students through an inspiring and entertaining illustration masterclass. Students learned how to bring characters to life on the page by exploring facial expressions, body language, and personality traits – all through drawing!
The event was not only fun and engaging, but also a fantastic opportunity for students to learn directly from a professional artist and storyteller. They laughed, sketched, shared their work, and most importantly, let their creativity shine.
Student feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with many saying it was one of their favourite learning experiences of the year. They left the session buzzing with ideas and inspired to keep creating their own characters at home and in class.
A big congratulations to all the students who were selected to attend this special VCES event - you represented Tarneit Rise wonderfully!
