Welcoming Pope Leo XIV: Pilgrim of Hope for the Church

Friday morning brought joyful news for Catholics worldwide: the election of Pope Leo XIV as the 267th successor of St Peter. With hearts full of prayer and hope, we welcome him as the new shepherd of our global Church.

Born Robert Francis Prevost on September 14, 1955, in Chicago, Pope Leo XIV is the first American Pope. A member of the Order of Saint Augustine, he has served the Church with humility and compassion, notably during his missionary work in Peru as Bishop of Chiclayo. His leadership has been marked by pastoral care, a deep commitment to social justice, and service to those on the margins. The name “Leo” holds great significance as Pope Leo XIII is remembered for his wisdom and social teaching and leading the church in the late 19th century.

“We must be a synodal Church. A Church that walks. A Church that always seeks peace. Always seeks charity. Always tries to be close especially to those who suffer.” — Pope Leo XIV, Inaugural Address

As journey through the Jubilee Year, themed "Pilgrims of Hope", Pope Leo XIV’s message resonates deeply. His call for unity, peace, and compassion encourages us all to journey in faith—walking together as hopeful witnesses to Christ in our world.

Let us keep Pope Leo XIV in our prayers as he takes up this sacred mission
