Congratulations to 2024 Year 11 Alumni Ava Hobart, on their successful nomination and win at the annual Artforce Awards. On the evening of March 27, Ava was presented with a trophy bearing their own design, during a grand presentation hosted at Brisbane City Hall. Each year Artforce recognises the achievements of local artists who contribute to the aesthetic enhancement of our urban spaces by painting public communications boxes, engaging the public to reflect upon our city.
"Smokey Daze" is a composition Ava devised to deliberately appeal to a youth aesthetic. Situated on box B8069, Lamington Ave, Lutwyche, it provides an opportunity for commuters to pause and consider the effects of smoking and vaping on health standards and life expectancy.
Where artists often produce beautiful representations of our environment, and indigenous flora and fauna, Ava chose to encourage a conversation about public health. Further-more, their work responds to the immediate suburban context in significant ways. Vibrant withcolourful pattern, it is a nod to the Eckersley's Art & Craft store nearby. The blue skulls, set against the backdrop of yellow with pink smoke rising from the mouths serve as a warning, engaging the numerous commuters vaping outside the non-smoking perimeters of the Lutwyche Transit Station.
A visual symphony, "Smokey Daze" speaks directly to the hearts of passers-by, offering a burst of joyous colour and inspiration amidst the hustle and bustle of daily life, reminding of the aforementioned dangers.
Our congratulations to Ava. We wish them all the best in their current Art studies at TAFE and declare our pride in numbering them amongst our TGSHS Visual Art alumni.
