Learning Across the ELC

Learning in the Banksia Room

Here is the Beehive

This week, our Term 1 friends were eager and proud to show our new Banksia Gold friends what group time is all about! Together, we’ve been enjoying singing and moving, with counting songs being a clear favourite. One highlight was learning the playful song “Here is the Beehive" . The children loved standing up, pretending to be buzzing bees with imaginary antennae! We explored buzzing fast and slow, high and low, left and right, and even curled up to sleep at night.

It was heartwarming to see how the children are already learning to take turns and show patience, waiting for their turn and appreciating when others have a go first. A beautiful start to the term filled with joyful connection and growing friendships.

Monster

This term, our inquiry focus is “Community”, and we’ve begun by exploring what it means to be part of our Banksia Gold group community. To help introduce the concept of feelings and how they shape our relationships, Ms Carr read The Colour Monster. A useful story that explores the different emotions we all experience. The children were engaged and curious as we talked about the main feelings in the story, such as happiness, anger, fear, love, sadness and calm. They eagerly demonstrated how our bodies might look when we feel certain emotions. From scrunched-up faces and stomping feet when we’re angry, to hiding behind our hands when feeling scared.

It was heartwarming to see the children begin to recognise these feelings in others and begin to understand empathy. Throughout the term, we’ll build on this foundation by introducing simple, meaningful phrases to help the children express kindness, offer help, and celebrate joy together. Each week, we’ll dive deeper into a different emotion and see where the children’s wonder and ideas lead our inquiry.
