Music with Emily
Term 2, 2025
Yesterday afternoon we had the wonderful opportunity to experience a live music performance in our multipurpose space. The travelling Musica Viva show titled The Rhythm Works, featuring Elijah Shepherd and Kevin Tuck, entertained us with some exciting and mesmerising percussion music. Our tired, restless bodies were reconnected and regulated and our creative brains were energised by the repetitive rhythms and musical pictures created by the two talented musicians.
The musicians played a selection of original compositions on a wide variety of instruments including the vibraphone, bass guitar, chameleon drums, boomwhacker tubes, rainstick and a myriad of untuned percussion instruments. We were encouraged to listen to the music and use our imaginations to see musical images. The pieces included The Chameleon, Roadtrain, Liffey Falls and The Storm. Volunteers in our audience were invited to the stage to play instruments and record animal noises to create our own versions of the music.
The students showed great audience skills and offered many wonderfully creative ideas to enhance the show. They answered questions that demonstrated an impressive understanding of the different elements of music - pitch, rhythm, beat, timbre, tempo, harmony and dynamics, (leaving their music teacher feeling a great sense of pride:)
Thank you to Kevin and Elijah and to Musica Viva Australia for enabling our students to have such enriching experiences at school.
Musica Viva is a wonderful organisation with a strong purpose:
‘To connect all Australians to something bigger than themselves: to powerful music which awakens the spirit.’

Choir meets every Wednesday lunchtime in the music room with Emily. Choir is currently open to students in years 1-6, and Preps will be invited to attend later in the term, when they commence full-time attendance.
Our students are busy learning a new song, Rock Star, and are already sounding amazing. It was especially fun to see some rock stars emerging during rehearsals, with students enjoying using the mic and some air guitar! We have welcomed back a couple of returning students this term which is great to see.
