Curriculum Matters

Foundation

On May 6th and 7th, the Foundation students had the exciting opportunity to participate in the Teddy Bear Hospital, run by the Monash University Medical Students’ Society.

With their teddies in tow, students rotated through 9 interactive learning stations - creating a finger cast, xraying their teddies, performing surgery on a teddy & learning how to call an ambulance.

It was a fun and engaging way to learn new things, practise existing skills & feel comfortable around medical professionals.

A big thank you to the Monash medical students for a fantastic event!

In Numeracy, Foundation students have started exploring how to collect data.

They designed their dream toy, surveyed classmates to see who would buy it and recorded responses using tally marks.

It was wonderful to see their creativity and enthusiasm for maths!

Level 1

Level 1 students have had a joyful and active few weeks of learning!

During our Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) time, we’ve been focusing on teamwork through fun and engaging team games. Our first session featured the Team Chain Race—a human relay full of laughter, smiles, and lots of cheering. It was a great way to build cooperation and connection.

In maths, we’ve been exploring doubles and near doubles. To help us understand these number patterns, we’ve used a range of hands-on materials like counters, counting teddy bears, and even paint to bring our learning to life. The classroom has been buzzing with number fun!

Over in Literacy, we’ve begun a new unit on poetry. We started by writing creative two-word-per-line poems all about school. Now, we’re letting our imaginations run wild as we craft our own spooky and mysterious poems inspired by The Dark, Dark Wood

The students are loving this chance to play with language and explore their creative sides.

Level 2

This week in Level 2, we are exploring the ea sound (as in "ready" and "weather") and the ure sound (as in "pure" and "cure").

Students will work through fun learning rotations to practice blending, segmenting, and manipulating these sounds. Activities include spelling with glass pens, using whisper phones to hear the sounds clearly, stamping to segment words, and participating in guided reading rotations to apply their skills in real texts.

We are excited to watch our learners grow in confidence as they master these important phonics patterns!

Level 3

State School Dance Australia

In Year 3, 16 students do State School dance and every couple of weeks, the state school students go all the way to Upwey Primary School to learn more dances. We have two more dances and the real show is in September. These are the songs that we learnt so far, Free from Desire, Learning to Fly, Think, Levels, and Come Alive.

It was fun but we were very tired.

On Tuesday 6th May, our talented Level 3 students participating in the State School Spectacular had their second dance hub rehearsal—and what a fantastic day it was! The students travelled to join others from across the region for a high-energy, full-day practice session.

Throughout the day, the students not only had a lot of fun but also demonstrated amazing commitment and enthusiasm. They worked incredibly hard to learn a brand-new dance and managed to complete three full routines by the end of the rehearsal. Their focus, teamwork, and determination were truly inspiring to watch.

It was a wonderful opportunity for the students to connect with peers from other schools and be part of a large, collaborative performance group.

We are so proud of how well they represented our school and can’t wait to see their continued progress as the big event draws closer.

Level 4

Over the last couple of weeks Grade 4B have been following Evan’s Dad ( Pubudu) journey through Nepal to Everest Base camp.

Evan has been giving us daily updates. We have a map and his itinerary to follow along from the classroom. Evan’s mum Badra has been printing and emailing photos for us to see some of the sights along the way. Thank you so much for Pubudu, Badra and Evan for allowing us to share in the journey.

With the start of Term 2 came a new Inquiry topic- Our Amazing Earth, the students from Level 4 have been learning about the different spheres that make up the Earth, the layers of the Earth and how natural events and made man events affect the planet.

This week we have been learning about the different types of Erosion. The students had the opportunity to build a mountain or valley in the sand pit and then test out water and wind erosion on their creation. The students predicted what would happen.

Level 5

This week in Level 5, we have been working on Mass in Maths.

We joined together as a whole year level, and the students completed a variety of activities to learn more about Mass. These included estimating, measuring, interactive games and converting.

The students had a great time learning in a cooperative and engaging way.

Level 6

Mother’s Day Event

On Monday the 12th of May, Year Six held a heartwarming and fun-filled event to celebrate our wonderful mums, aunties and grandmas. From 9:30 to 11:00, classrooms were buzzing with laughter, love and lots of exciting activities!

In 6T, the nail salon was in full swing, students painted their special person's nails, and some even painted their own, which led to plenty of giggles. Over in 6W, the cupcake decorating station was a sweet hit, with colourful frosting and sprinkles flying everywhere! In 6V, it was photo time, with families posing together to capture memories in our fun photo booth. Meanwhile, 6P transformed into a cosy mini café, serving tea, coffee and delicious biscuits for all to enjoy.

Outside, the fun continued with a range of lively activities like hopscotch, bean bag tossing, egg-and-spoon races and a scavenger hunt around the school grounds. There was something for everyone!

To top off the morning, the whole cohort gathered for a massive Kahoot quiz! With 50 teams competing, the energy was sky-high as everyone battled it out for the chance to win some mouth-watering chocolate prizes.

What a wholesome and joy-filled morning it was!
