Kinder/Year 1

Our class has settled back in so well after the holidays. Could it be that they are happy to be back?? Our routines began seamlessly on Day 1, and we haven’t skipped a beat yet.
Our mums have been the focus, and we have been talking and writing about why they are so special to us. We have been getting messy with papier mache and lots of fine motor control crafts (it’s like the gym for our fingers!) to get our gifts ready. We hope all our mums had a wonderful Mother’s Day full of precious memories.
An Early Stage One student:
MAE-GM-02 - describes and compares lengths
MAE-GM-03 - identifies half the length and the halfway point.
A Stage One Student:
MA1-GM-02 - measures, records, compares and estimates lengths and distances using uniform informal units, as well as metres and centimetres
MA1-GM-03 - creates and recognises halves, quarters and eighths as part measures of a whole length.
In Maths, we have begun investigating length. Playdough snakes have been an excellent resource as we try to make the longest snakes and find a suitable unit to measure their length. Funnily enough, rulers, pencils and scissors were not helpful as our snakes were so curvy! We have also used language such as twice as long, half as long, halfway, and half a snake. Year One has explored other fractions of lengths as well. If you are relaxing at home this weekend, ask your child to figure out how many of their feet it takes to find the length of your couch, a room, the kitchen bench, etc. Which is the longest? Whereabouts is halfway? And the most important question of all - how do you know? We know that to be successful at measuring, the units must have no gaps and be counted accurately and compared.
