This course develops the students’ enjoyment and understanding of the way all texts are written. Critical thinking skills are central to the appreciation of a range of texts. Students experiment with writing across genres and explore their own expression and writing style across different purposes.
Content
English content is organised under three interrelated strands:
- Language
- Literature
- Literacy.
These are assessed across three modes:
- Reading and viewing
- Speaking and Listening
- Writing
Students will complete a range of written tasks throughout each term. These include the study of a range of texts that are relevant and exciting for young people. Including:
- Graphic Novels
- Film
- Issues texts, including social media and traditional media
- Plays
Assessment
Students will complete a range of written and spoken tasks including:
- Formal Essays
- Speeches
- Creative Writing
Enhancement English
This part of the Enhancement program encourages students to extend their thinking and writing abilities. Students will be challenged to develop explicit understandings of the way language is constructed in contemporary texts. They will learn strategies to improve the quality of their own writing in all forms and subject areas. Students are provided with a choice in how they experiment and investigate new ideas.

- Short stories, poetry, novels and other narrative texts
- Film
- Issues texts, including social media and traditional media

Students will complete a range of written and spoken tasks including:
- Formal Essays
- Speeches
- Creative Writing
Emerging Stories Elective
An exciting opportunity to experiment with 21st century skills and storytelling, the course will consist of learning activities where students explore a range of creative writing approaches.
Students will investigate and analyse a range of practices including poetry, podcasting,and scriptwriting for dramatic media. They will design their own story for a particular audience using different mediums to communicate purpose and thematic ideas.
