Level 2

Reading

Over the past few weeks, our level 2 students have been improving their comprehension of reading texts. First, we focused on literal comprehension where they had to locate information that was explicitly stated in the text to help answer questions. This fortnight, our focus has been inferential comprehension. This is where the students must combine text information with their own prior knowledge to understand texts concepts that are only implied by the text. They have accomplished this using the prompts of: 'the text says... I know that... I infer that...' to demonstrate their thinking.

Writing

In Writing, our students have continued to improve their skills in writing Persuasive texts. This fortnight, our students have started constructing their own texts using a structured sequence of paragraphs including their position (how they feel about the topic), supporting arguments and a conclusion. We have explored the difference between using facts and opinions to support our point, and worked on selecting arguments that will convince the reader and not just ourselves. The students have demonstrated great use of persuasive language and techniques in these pieces.

Maths

The Level 2 students have been working hard on improving their addition skills using a variety of techniques. We have explored previous concepts of "friends to 10" and near-doubles, then taking this further by exploring how we can apply these concepts to harder problems (e.g. if 4+6=10, then I also know that 14+6=20, 44+6=50, 24+16=40, etc.). To add two-digit numbers, we have practiced partitioning numbers into their 10s and 1s to make adding easier, i.e. 24+35= 20+30+4+5 and then solving.

Mother's Day

Level 2 would like to wish a very happy Mother's Day to all who celebrate this day! On the preceding Thursday, we invited our students' mums and special people into the classroom to celebrate and enjoy some Mother's Day activities. Thank you to all who attended and supported us in putting on this special morning!
