Level 5

Literacy
Reading in Level 5 has centered around comprehension, looking at strategies to understand both literal and inferential questions. A key reading lesson centered around ethics - 'What if everyone did that?' Students explored small actions having larger consequences if everyone did that. Students worked collaboratively to discuss, read about, and respond to scenarios and the question 'What if everyone did that?'
Numeracy
Students learnt new skills, applying their knowledge to solve problems relating to fractions, decimals, and percentages. They have used hands-on materials to reason and justify their responses to real-life problems. Did you know that every student has access to a Maths Tool Kit? These toolkits provide students with access to math equipment to help foster understanding and are used regularly in the Level 5 classrooms. Some examples of extending prompts to further understanding include:
- If a product’s price increases by 25% and then decreases by 25%, would the final price be the same as the original? Why or why not?
- Imagine you have a $150 budget for a party. If you spend 30% on food and 40% on decorations, how much of your budget is left over?
Friendology and Respectful Relationships
The main theme of Friendology has been for Level 5 to learn about 'ANTS' and 'PETS'
ANTS stands for Automatic Negative Thoughts - something we all have and PETS which stands for Positive Enabling Thoughts. Students discussed strategies of how to turn their ANTS into PETS through whole class discussion and ANT squashing techniques.
HEPS Friendoleaders at Work with Level 1
With the help of our Mental Health and Wellbeing Leader, Level 5 Friendoleaders have been planning and teaching a Friendology lesson to our Level 1 students. Level 5 students displayed terrific leadership and agency in their own learning. Level 1 students were taught new skills on how to make a new friend.
1. Be a super introducer. Introduce yourself by saying your name and hello.
2. Ask and Pass...Ask a question and pass it on for the other person to answer.
3. Be an inviter. Don't wait to be invited... do the inviting yourself. Invite your friend to play a game or join in with others. Repeat this with the same person on a different day.
4. Practice doing this in different settings.
