Borrowing and Student Voice
Our students are continuing to borrow books on a regular basis and enjoy the benefits of reading.
We are happy to be adding to our collection and are focussed on providing reading materials based on student interest. We have recently added books that have been shortlisted for the 2025 Children’s Book of The Year (CBCA awards). One of those books is called “Here Comes The Night” by Isobelle Carmody.
A superb YA fantasy set in the near future, full of secrets, high stakes, peril, deceptions and dreamwalkers, from the internationally acclaimed and bestselling author of the Obernewtyn Chronicles and The Gathering. Will slipped on the left glove and twitched a finger to establish a link to the kite tronics. A shiver of electric energy ran through his hands as they synched to his nerves through the gloves. Will lives with his father in a future domed Canberra where citizens are safe from extreme weather events, dangerous solar radiation and civil unrest. He does not question his carefully controlled existence until the recurrence of an old nightmare propels him on a dangerous quest. Gradually Will discovers his dreams hold cryptic clues that lead him into a shadowy alternate dimension. Here he must grapple with dark forces that operate in both worlds, with the help of his best friend Ender, her brilliant but difficult twin sister Magda, and a mysterious gift from his uncle.
Student voice is particularly important to us, and we welcome your suggestions. Pop into the LRC and chat to us about genres/topics/ titles you would like to see in your library.
Book Displays
To keep our students interested and engaged in reading, we are continually updating our displays. This enables us to present books in themes or in line with current events and celebrations within the school. Keep an eye out for new displays throughout the year. Look out for our ‘Blind Date with a Book’ happening in term 3.

Library Monitor -Eva Jenkins 8C
Meet Eva 😊
Eva is one of our wonderful Library Monitors. Library Monitors have a vital role within the LRC. Each week Eva volunteers her time to help with tasks such as borrowing and returning of books, shelving and being a great reading role model. Library Monitors are given Wyndham Reward Points each week, which they can use to purchase a variety of goods.
This week I surprised Eva with books that she requested for the Library Collection. As you can see, she was extremely excited!
Reading For Pleasure Program
In response to research, Wyndham Central College has introduced The Reading for Pleasure Initiative. This program is coordinated by Ms Virginia Millard and supported by all staff within the school. Students in years 7 and 8 are given 15 minutes, three times per week to read. In Years 9-12 students have 15 minutes twice per week. Reading for Pleasure is reading for joy; it is not marked or assessed. Students choose what they read, at what pace and on what topic. Each tutor room has their own bookcase with a variety of books and reading materials to select from.
What can you do at home?
As always, your support is critical to success, and you might be wondering how you can do this.
- Be a reading model- time is precious but even finding time once a week or fortnight where you read and talk to your child about what you are reading can send powerful messages. It doesn’t matter what language you read in as long as you are modelling the value of reading.
- Think about where you might access books> local library, school library, op shops are all good places to start.
- Talk to your child about reading and what topics they are interested in.
Happy reading !
