Aspen Bosnjakovic to represent Australian in the upcoming U17 Futsal Championships in China

Aspen has only experienced playing competitive soccer games as a Football Development Program (FDP) student. She began with us as a year 9 FDP student and her commitment and hard work have seen her develop quickly and achieve some phenomenal individual and team successes over the last two years.

Aspen Bosnjakovic came to us as a basketballer; we turned her into a soccer player.

She told us she was an outfielder; we told her she was a goalkeeper.

She received her uniform yesterday to represent Australian in the upcoming U17 Futsal Championships in China.

Please congratulate her and wish her well representing WCC FDP and Australia.

SPORTS REPORTS

Senior Boys and Girls Badminton – Eagle Stadium

On Thursday 9th of May our senior boys and girls' badminton teams competed at Eagle Stadium in what proved to be an incredibly successful day—despite the scoreboard not quite reflecting the heart and effort shown by our students.

Every participant represented our college with pride and integrity, truly embodying our school values both on and off the court. Their sportsmanship, teamwork and resilience were on full display throughout the day, and we couldn’t be prouder of their efforts.

A special shout-out goes to Yejin Hong (Year 12) and Rawiri Shortland (Year 11) for their outstanding contributions. Yejin led by example, playing with passion and determination, winning some of our only games for the day. Beyond her individual performance, she generously supported new players with warmth and humility, showcasing true leadership. Rawiri, meanwhile, was a pillar of encouragement and organisation. His respectful attitude towards opponents, coupled with his consistent affirmations and behind-the-scenes support, made a significant impact on the team’s spirit and cohesion.

Congratulations to all involved—you’ve done our college proud!

Senior Girls Volleyball Region Finals

On the 12th of May, 10 of our talented WCC girls represented the school with pride at the Regional Division Volleyball competition — and what a day it was!

The team kicked off their campaign at 9:45 AM against North Geelong Secondary College. From the first serve, our girls showed strong communication, effective rotations, and great team chemistry. While North Geelong had some solid players, WCC’s teamwork and consistency proved superior, earning a convincing 2–0 win.

Next up was Melton Secondary College — the reigning regional champions. Known for their strength and athleticism, the Melton team presented a serious challenge. However, our girls stepped up, showing incredible court coverage, clever plays, and dominant blocking. WCC took the match 2–0 and booked their spot in the grand final.

The final was against Maryborough Sporting Academy (MSA), a well-drilled and powerful team. Our girls gave it their all in a thrilling contest, with standout moments including a monster block by Sou (12F). Despite the determined effort, MSA proved too strong in the end, taking the final 2–0.

Congratulations to our WCC team for an outstanding day of volleyball, finishing Regional Runners-Up! It was a challenging and high-pressure day, but every player showed resilience, skill, and sportsmanship.

While all girls played incredibly well and were valuable to the team, the Most Valuable Player (MVP) for the day goes to Raquel Grey (11A) for her outstanding performance throughout the tournament.      Well done, WCC!

Senior Boys Football Team Report – May 15

On the 15th of May, the Senior Boys Football team headed to Wootten Road Reserve in Tarneit for a day of competition. The team was eager and committed to performing at their best, having put in numerous training sessions in the lead-up to the event. Featuring a mix of Year 11 and Year 12 students, it was fantastic to see the camaraderie and shared commitment to a common goal across year levels.

Upon arrival at Wootten Reserve, focus quickly shifted to our first game against Tarneit Senior College. Many of our students had friends on the opposing team, which added a competitive edge to the match. The team started strongly, showcasing their strength and cohesion. Midfielders Hayden Spall and Michael Ivanina, alongside ruckman Akau Alier, dominated the opening game. Their control in the midfield gave our forwards numerous scoring opportunities, resulting in multiple goals across both halves. The boys secured a 60-point win — an outstanding result for a 30-minute game.

Our second game saw us against Manor Lakes, a team that has previously required our best effort to defeat. Unfortunately, Manor Lakes could only field 12 players on the day. In a great display of sportsmanship and respect for fair competition, some Wyndham Central students volunteered to play for Manor Lakes in the second half. This gesture demonstrated the exceptional character and integrity of our team. In what seemed like good football karma, we went on to claim a 40-point victory, setting up a Grand Final showdown against Werribee Secondary College.

Following the disappointment of finishing runners-up in 2024, the boys were determined to go one better this year. Like us, Werribee entered the final undefeated, having played strong games against Suzanne Cory and The Grange. Werribee started well, dominating territory in the opening five minutes and kicking the first goal. However, backline leaders Kingston Leo and Akilias Jonatan stood strong, helping weather the early onslaught. As the game progressed, we regained control, with Hayden Spall, Michael Ivanina, and Joshua McIntosh showing their class and dominating through the midfield. Their efforts set up our forwards once again, and they delivered, sealing a 20-point win and earning us a place in the next round on the 24th of June.

This was a huge effort from the team, especially considering nearly half had little or no prior football experience. The mateship, teamwork, determination, and overall character shown throughout the day were key to our success. This was best exemplified by Hayden Spall, who was not only our best player but also an outstanding role model from start to finish.
