Year 10, 11 & 12

Assistant Principal's Report

Mid-Year examinations.

Congratulations to all Year’s 10, 11 and 12 students on the completion of the mid-year examinations in June and their start to semester 2.

Throughout the examinations, students followed examination guidelines and the school values of Respect, Co-operation and Excellence and we are pleased with some of the excellent results achieved.

To assist students, we conduct our Year 11 and 12 exams to follow the same processes used for the Year 12 VCAA (Victorian Curriculum Assessment Authority) exams at the end of the year so that students are prepared and familiar with the process.

Attitudes to Schools Survey.

All students have now completed the Department of Education, Attitudes to Schools Survey and I would like to thank everyone for their participation and valuable feedback.

We are in the process of analysing the survey results to ensure that we continue to improve our programs and the whole school learning environment which will enable us to support the continuation of best practice in teaching and learning at Wyndham Central College.

General Achievement Test.

All Year 11 and 12 students studying a Year 12 subject completed The GAT (General Achievement Test) on Tuesday 17 June.

The GAT plays an important role in the quality assurance of VCE assessment’s and provides students with an opportunity to demonstrate that they meet the Victorian Literacy and Numeracy Standards expected at a senior secondary level. Well done to all students involved in the completion of both tests.

Year 10 Information session

On 10 June we held the Year 10 Information session for parents/carers and we had a pleasing number in attendance which is always good to see. During the information session, leaders discussed the VCE (Victorian Certificate of Education), VCE/VM (Victorian Certificate of Education/Vocational Major) and VETis subjects (Vocational Education and Training in schools) and guidance on their selection. We discussed how to apply for the programs using WEB Preferences and provided information about Year 10 Work Experience. The presentation was sent to everyone via Compass for the benefit of all. The VM interview process is occurring with students before the school holidays. Students will select their choices for their Year 11 subjects next term and you will have the opportunity to be involved in this process at school and further information will be provided in due course.

Reports

Semester one reports will be distributed to students before the end of this term and students will complete an activity to reflect on their semester one work. I encourage all parents/carers to take the time to sit down with your child and discuss their progress and to assist them in ensuring that a daily homework and home study routine is put in place. Homework is work that is set by a classroom teacher by a set date, home study is when a student does revision work such as read over notes taken throughout the day and do general revision.

Attendance is vital.

Did you know:

  • When your child misses just 5 minutes per day of school, this will equal to 3 days missed per year.
  • When your child misses just 30 minutes per day of school, this will equal to 18 days missed per year.
  • When your child misses just 1 day per fortnight of school, this will equal to 4 weeks per year which equals to 1 year missed over their school life.
  • When your child misses just 1 day per week of school, this will equal to 8 weeks per year which equals 2.5 year missed over their school life.

The main reasons for school absence are:

Sickness – There are always times when students need to miss school, such as when they are ill. However it is important that they are only away on the days they are genuinely sick. Setting up good sleep patterns, eating well and exercising regularly can make a big difference.

Family holidays – It is crucial that holidays are planned during school holidays where possible and not during the term. If you are planning to go on holiday during school time, please ensure that you seek permission from the Principal in advance, to assist in developing an absence learning plan.

“Day off” – Think twice before letting your child have a “day off” for no reason as they could fall behind with their school work – everyday counts.

Truancy – This is when students choose not to go to school without their parent’s permission or skip out of class during the day. There can be many reasons for truancy and the best way to address this is to work with us to develop a wellbeing or attendance plan.

School refusal - School refusing children experience significant emotional distress not only when going to school but also at the thought of going to school; they may be absent from school for weeks or even months at a time. School refusal differs from truancy as children generally stay home with the knowledge of the parents and despite their best efforts to encourage their child to go to school.

If for any reason your child must miss school, there are things that you can do to ensure they do not fall behind in their school work:

  • Inform the school via your child’s Tutor Teacher, Year Level Coordinator or Year Level Leader.
  • Ask them to check Compass to see what work they need to catch up on and complete some homework.

While all absences can affect academic performance, Department of Education statistics show that unexcused absences are a much stronger indicator of lower achievement in their school results, including English and maths.

We are her to help you and if you are having attendance issues with your child, please speak to your child’s Tutor Teacher to assist in addressing the issues. In Victoria, school is compulsory for children aged 6 – 17 years.

Mobile Phone Policy.

A reminder that in accordance with the department’s Mobile Phone Policy, issued by the Minister for Education, personal mobile phones must not be used at Wyndham Central College during school hours (9am-3.00pm), including during break one and two and mobile phones need to be stored in a student’s locker.

School uniform is important to the community.

Full school uniform is compulsory and allows students to have a sense of belonging and to show pride in our school within the community. Please ensure that your child wears the correct uniform to school every day and if you need any assistance with the supply of the school uniform then please contact their Tutor Teacher who will be able to assist you.

Year 12 students are now over the halfway mark, and it is time to put some extra hard work in place and for students to believe in themselves. If you believe that you will succeed, you will because you are motivated to do so, and you will do whatever you have to do to accomplish your goals. Resilience is an important part of adolescence, and I encourage all students to strive for their best and not to give up on their studies and their future aspirations. Year 12 students, work hard and do not give up, it will not be too long before your last year of secondary school will be over and you will venture into a new and exciting world of further studies or work.

Support is available.

Please remember if you have any concerns that your first point of contact, is your child’s Tutor Teacher. “Compass” is an effective way to communicate with teachers at school and/or by phoning the College.

As we know, when parents/carers are actively involved in conversations with their child about their education the outcomes are far more positive. When this is combined in a three-way partnership with students, teachers and parent/carers the outcomes and opportunities are more successful, so please feel free to seek support when needed.

I urge all families to work with us to develop positive relationships between students, teachers and parents/carers and we encourage open and respectful, two-way communication.

I would like to wish all students a relaxing school holiday and I look forward to seeing all students at school, ready to learn, at the commencement of term 3.

Year Level Leader's Report - Year 10

Congratulations to students for their efforts in Semester One and particularly around the exams. We saw lots of students studying hard and using the library in the mornings and I’m sure that will be reflected in some pleasing results.

There was a great turn out for the information night on the 10th June where we gave an overview of the options available in year 11 and 12. For those unable to make it, the presentation from the night has been shared via Compass.

Students have been selecting their taster subjects for next term when they will have a day as a year 11 to get an idea of different VCE subjects. It is important that students think carefully about which subjects they want to try as that will give them valuable insight when they are selecting their options for next year.

In week 2 of next term, students will complete their choices for year 11 via web preferences. They will require a parent or carer to sign off on those choices. Whichever subjects are chosen, once they have started those subjects it is very difficult to change, so students are selecting what they want to do for the next two years. We encourage students to spend time looking through the handbook, reflecting on the information they have been presented with in assemblies and talk to both teachers and those at home about the best options for themselves. If you have any questions or require any assistance, please don’t hesitate to be in touch.

We have also seen many work experience arrangement forms come in and students working hard to find a place for themselves. Please keep supporting students to find a place and complete all of the paperwork. A reminder that we would like all paperwork back by the end of term 2 so that all students can participate in work experience in term 3. Again, if you have any questions about work experience, please let us know.

Year Level Leader's Report - Year 11

Congratulations to the Year 11 students on successfully completing their first semester of senior studies. They have shown great perseverance, adaptability, and maturity as they navigated the increased expectations and responsibilities of VCE. Reaching this milestone is a significant achievement, and they should be proud of the hard work and dedication they’ve demonstrated throughout the term. We look forward to seeing how they continue to grow and build on this strong start in Semester 2.

The Year 11 students approached their Semester 1 exams with a positive attitude and a commendable level of maturity. They demonstrated strong organisation, resilience, and a willingness to engage with the challenges of exam preparation. Teachers were impressed by the calm and focused manner in which students conducted themselves throughout the exam period, reflecting their growth as independent and responsible learners.

We encourage all families to review the Semester 1 reports, which have been distributed to students and are also available on Compass. These reports provide an overview of each student’s subject performance, assessment results, attendance, overall progress, and homework completion.

Students who have not passed one or more subjects are expected to complete any outstanding coursework or redemption tasks during the holidays, as advised by their subject teachers. This will ensure they are up to date and ready to resume learning in Term 3.

We encourage parents and carers to contact the relevant subject teachers to discuss any incomplete work and find ways to support their child in achieving a ‘Satisfactory’ (S) result in the required subjects.

Term 3:

Term 3 will feature events such as pathway expos and an Elevate session on Memory Mnemonics.

On behalf of the Year 11 team, I would like to sincerely thank all families for their continued support. Wishing everyone a relaxing and enjoyable school holiday.

Lateness to school and classes

We seek your continued support in ensuring that your child arrives at school on time each day, ideally before 9:00 am. The Wyn Time session, which begins promptly at 9:00 am, is a vital part of the school day. It provides students with valuable opportunities to prepare for the day ahead, receive important reminders, collaborate with peers, and engage in wellbeing activities—especially important in their final year of VCE. It is also essential that students attend all their scheduled classes on time throughout the day. Persistent lateness or failure to attend classes on time may result in afterschool detention or other appropriate consequences. We appreciate your support in reinforcing the importance of punctuality and full attendance as key habits for academic success and personal responsibility.

General Achievement Test (GAT)

All students successfully completed the General Achievement Test (GAT) on Tuesday, 17th June. The GAT plays an important role in ensuring the accuracy and fairness of VCE external assessments and school-based assessments. Additionally, GAT results may be used to calculate Derived Examination Scores if required and will appear on students' official transcripts issued by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA). To acknowledge student’s effort and commitment, they were rewarded with a pizza lunch and drinks following the test.

Semester 1 Report Review

Families and guardians are encouraged to carefully review the Semester 1 reports, which will be distributed to students during the final week of Term 2 and are also accessible via Compass. These reports provide a comprehensive overview of each student’s academic progress.

To be awarded the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE), students must successfully complete at least 16 units, which must include three units from the English group, with at least one Unit 3 and 4 sequence, and three additional Unit 3 and 4 sequences in any other subjects.

In practical terms, Year 12 students are expected to pass a minimum of four subjects, including English (equivalent to 8 units), unless they have already completed a Unit 3 & 4 subject in Year 11 through acceleration. Failing a subject may negatively impact a student’s ATAR and could affect their eligibility for certain university or tertiary courses.

Students who have not passed one or more subjects must complete any outstanding coursework or redemption tasks assigned by their subject teachers over the holiday break. This is crucial to ensure students are caught up and prepared for a successful start to Term 3. Families and carers are encouraged to contact the relevant subject teachers to discuss any incomplete work and understand how to support their child in achieving an S (Satisfactory) result in the relevant subject(s). Your partnership in this process is vital to your child’s continued progress and success.

Year 12 Pyjama & Movie Night

In recognition of our Year 12 students’ hard work throughout their examinations and Semester 1, we are pleased to host a Pyjama & Movie Night during the final week of Term 2. Approximately 100 students have expressed interest in attending this after-school event, which will run from 4:30 PM to 7:00 PM. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to relax, connect with peers, and celebrate their efforts in a fun and supportive environment. We would also like to acknowledge and sincerely thank our School Captains, House Captains, and Class Captains for their leadership and commitment in helping to plan and organise this event. Their contributions have been instrumental in bringing it together. We look forward to a successful and enjoyable evening for all involved!

On behalf of the Year 12 team, I extend appreciation to all families for their ongoing support. Wishing everyone a restful and enjoyable school holiday.
