Year 7 Healesville Sanctuary excursion

Shannon Sargeant

Year 7 students have recently visited Healesville Sanctuary as part of their Fighting Extinction project. Students looked at the characteristics of skulls that determine animal behaviour, as well as looking at the food web for the lyrebird. Each student has been given one of the 27 species Zoos Victoria is fighting to save from extinction and will use the information learned to create a campaign to raise awareness of their species.

From Max S. -

I had lots of fun at the Year 7 Healesville Sanctuary excursion! We all split off into little groups with our friends and we each got a map. We had to find particular animals and fill out a table about them. Then our class met back up all together and did some activities run by the Sanctuary staff. One of them was with the lyrebirds where we learnt about food chains. We also saw the dingo and got to hold some animal bones. After that we all got to go to the bird show and see some of Australia’s amazing bird species!  Overall, it was a really fun experience and I learnt lots about Australian animals.
