The aim of this competition is to create new homes for the creatures living in Old Pound Reserve and Lilydale Heights College to attract more animals to the area and increase biodiversity. These boxes will provide habitats for native hollow-dependent fauna, and to make the area a safer, more welcoming place for creatures to live.

Nest boxes aren’t just for birds, as many animals use the hollows in their environment to live. Animals such as possums and bats rely on natural hollows for safety and shelter, alongside many native bird species.    Your challenge is to make a nesting box which can be placed in a tree in either the Old Pound Reserve or College grounds.

Historical records show that the following species are found in Old Pound Reserve; any of these species could have need for nest boxes (building instructions can be found by following the link):

Australian Wood Duck (Wood Duck – Nest Box Tales

Small parrots, Eastern Rosella, Crimson Rosella, Rainbow Lorikeet: (Eastern Rosella – Nest Box Tales

Laughing Kookaburra: (Kookaburra – Nest Box Tales

Kreft’s (Sugar) Glider: (Sugar Glider – Nest Box Tales

Common Ringtail Possum: (Ringtail Possum – Nest Box Tales

Bring finished boxes to the B-Wing office in Week 1 of Term 4. House Points will be awarded to all entrants. The best nesting box as judged by the Sustainability Team will win a Bunnings gift card to put towards your next building project.
