Leader of Pedagogy

Ms Natalie Mellowship (Years 7-9) & Mrs Jenny Roff ( Years 10-12)

Much of the work the Curriculum Team have been focussing on this year with great Teaching and Learning has been linked with the work of Lyn Sharratt and Clarity. O’Connor Catholic College has embraced this work and applied the components of the Assessment Waterfall Chart, utlising it as a model for effective Teaching and Learning.

“Teachers need to know that every student is learning by continuously assessing their progress and incorporating that information into daily instruction.” – Sharratt and Fullan

The Power of the Assessment Waterfall Chart

The Assessment Waterfall Chart serves as a visual representation of student data. By using the Waterfall Chart, it allows teachers to monitor the progress of students, including achievements and identify areas for improvement or that require additional support, helping teachers to then drive targeted interventions.

Data-driven instruction has the power to dramatically improve student performance and when conducted properly, using data to inform and drive teaching practice, it can be one of the most effective ways to help students achieve success in the classroom. With this, a school’s focus needs to ask “what are students learning?”.

The Assessment Waterfall Chart and OCC

Over the past couple of weeks, Leaders of Learning for our Key Learning Areas have been working collaboratively to address how they will successfully embed the Assessment Waterfall Chart in their faculties, as a pedagogical approach to our Teaching and Learning to drive student achievement.

Leaders worked on discussing the five elements of effective assessment practice: establishing learning intentions, creating success criteria, providing explicit and descriptive feedback, building the capacity of students to peer and self-assess and develop the capacity for individual goal-setting.

By incorporating the Assessment Waterfall Chart into our classroom practices and embedding it as a part of our pedagogy, we will be able to create a dynamic and responsive learning environment for all students.
