Religious Education News

Mr Andrew May

The Gospel reading for Wednesday 7th August tells of the time when a woman begged Jesus to help her daughter who was unwell. Jesus’ initial response was lukewarm to say the best but following her repeated requests for help and the encouragement of his Disciples, Jesus gave her the help she was asking for.

There are many ways to look at this story, but one of the key messages is that the woman did not give up asking for help. Even though she was initially rebuffed by Jesus, she did not let that stop her from asking for help and in the end, she was successful in gaining what she needed - not for her, but for her daughter.

In our Religious Education lessons we strive to unpack the Gospels for the students in our care, so that they can see that these stories are not just ‘stories’ of times gone past, but are full of important life lessons, such as the value of persistence. We are called to be persistent in our lives so that we can gain the most out of them. The example of our Olympic and Paralympic athletes shows us all the value of persistence, often in the face of great adversity.

In my last newsletter report I provided information on the Vinnies Winter Appeal. This year’s collection shows that the spirit of generosity is strong within our school community, and once more I’d like to thank everyone who supported through donations of warm clothing and other items. The class that provided the greatest number of goods as well as being home to the greatest number of donors was Ursula 3 PAC class - well done! This appeal would not be the great success it is without the efforts of Mrs Leggatt and her small but hard-working Vinnies group.

Next week Year 11 students will be participating in their Leadership Retreat at the Coffs Coast Adventure Centre. This retreat is an initial step in the process of selecting our next cohort of school student leaders. I wish all of the attendees the very best as they gather for the retreat, relax and reflect on the decisions they will be making in the near future, as well as getting ready to commence the final stage in their formal school education, their HSC year. Like the woman in the Gospel, they will value the quality of persistence in their lives as they move forward

Keeping in touch with what is happening in the Cathedral Parish is easy through their website and Facebook pages.

With such a difficult year and a half it has been harder for parishioner's to give to the parish through the plates, particularly when the church is closed as it is at present. The Parish account details are available on the Parish bulletin.
