Careers Corner

Stage 5 Careers lessons are in full swing for Term 3 with year 9 students learning about the roles and responsibilities of workplace participants. Students have begun to investigate their obligations as a future employee in terms of tax and superannuation and how to identify if something is not quite right on a payslip.

Year 10 Careers lessons are all focused around Stage 6 subject selection with choices closing last Friday. Students were given the opportunity to review their choices and discuss their options for receiving an ATAR and other interests such as TVET and SBAT study. Looking forward, the upcoming Year 10 Careers lessons will focus on preparing for and sitting the Minimum Standard Test for Writing. More communication about dates for these tests will be emailed home over the next week.

Work Experience opportunities are continuing for year 10 with many students already completing their week of industry learning. Work Experience is intended to be student led, interest based and not compulsory. Any year 10 student who wishes to complete work experience must complete the Go2WorkExperience modules prior to going on placement. Please send a copy of your certificate to Mrs Galvin and follow up for the correct forms. Students are not permitted to attend any Work Experience without completing the Go2WorkExperience modules and submitting the required forms.

In week 2, students with an interest in the Australian Defence Force were able to attend an information session presented by ADF Careers. Thank you to Flight Sergeant Craig Boundy, Sergeant Lachlan Mitchell, Leading Seaman Damien Edwards as well as Major Trevor Thatcher and Trooper Liam Lamb from the 12th/16th Hunter River Lancers. Students learned about entry requirements, training and career opportunities within ADF and asked a range of questions about subject selection, the ADFA, Gap Year and Reserves.

We were very lucky to have representatives from The University of Newcastle attend our College last week. Senior students were able to attend the “Drop-In” session and have their questions answered. Hot topics included early entry, course requirements, Life in residential college. If you are interested in course guides or information booklets for tertiary institutions please access the Careers bookshelf in MPU7.
