Senior and Middle School News

Grade 3/4

Book Week

On Monday our school had a Book Week dress up day.  Each student dressed up as a book character. When we did our parade Mrs. Towill was in charge because Mr. E doesn’t work on Mondays.

Normally the 5/6 students would walk around the parade first, but Mrs. Towill let the preps go first because she was in charge. We all paraded up the middle, and back to the stage in the B.E.R. People dressed up as the following: Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, Matilda, Spiderman, Minions, Unicorns, Pikachu and princesses. Each theme paraded to the music of that theme.

Mrs Towill and Mrs Laity did a great job organising all of the music.

Grade 5/6

ISAC Challenge

Grade 5/6 students recently competed in an event hosted by Somerville/Tyabb Rotary at Bluescope Steel.

The basis of the challenge, which saw a number of schools competing was around the principles of flight.

Students researched, designed, planned, constructed and tested paper planes for distance and flight time around the 4 main flight principles; Weight, lift, thrust and drag. This coupled with flight control for accuracy was more challenging than first perceived.

Although we did not win, all students were engaged in learning about flight. Plus, a bonus was winning $200 for the school.

Students who competed included; Dylan, Jedd, Degan, Guy, Luella, Chloe, Gemma, Sheena, Indie, Ashleigh and Kooper

Year 5 & 6 Literacy

This week in Literacy we are beginning to looking at making inferences about a character's feelings in a narrative text. This involves looking for clues within the text that indicate how a character might be feeling such as body language and their actions.

If listening to your child read at home it would be great to ask them questions about their texts that require them to make these types of inferences.  These types of discussions are important to your child's development.

Our students are also focusing on improving their Oral Reading Fluency which involves them reading modelled texts out loud each day in order to improve their fluency, expression and ability to pause where needed.

Year 5 & 6 Maths

During maths sessions we have been focusing on using estimation to check the reasonableness of our answers, learning and using new multiplication strategies such as the Change and Fix strategy and adding decimals. These concepts are quite difficult and the grade 5/6 students should be proud of their efforts within the classroom.
