Prep News

Well we have had another extremely busy 3 weeks. WOW! What excitement in the Prep classroom! We've had our whole school Olympic theme week, the 100 Days Of School, Athletics Day at Western Port Secondary College and Book Week. All of these events as well as the every-day learning in English, Maths, Science, Art, PE, Music, Auslan, RRRR, Humanities, ICT and more! Here are some of our exciting events!
100 Days Of School
Wow! We finally made it to 100 days of school! We have been keeping a countdown every day since day 1! We had a special celebration day where we focused on all things '100' and being '100 days Brighter'. We dressed in bright colours, decorated biscuits, counted to 100, and completed tasks about the number 100. It was a really fun day!
Olympics
We had a great 2 weeks learning about the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. We watched some of the Australian athletes, learnt about France and the sports that were held. We read 'Koala Lou' - a story about a koala entering the bush Olympics and talked about the Olympic rings and medals won.
Whole School Athletics Day
We had a fun day at Western Port Secondary College participating in fun 'Olympic' style events. There were hurdles to jump, an egg and spoon race, high jump, vortex throwing and team relays. The Octopus game with parents involved was a lot of fun! Thank you to the parents who were able to assist on the day. Congratulations to everyone for your teamwork.
Book Week
What a fantastic effort everyone went to for our Book Week Parade. There were so many loved book characters. This week we will focus on the picture story books from The Children's Book Council of Australia awards. We really liked the book that won - 'Gymnastica Fantastica'. It was one of our favourites too!
English
In English we have continued to learn to write the uppercase letters of the alphabet. We have also learnt some more digraphs - 'th', 'qu', and 'ng'. Our reading goal is to read more fluently so we can understand what we are reading.
In our reading sessions we have had an author study on Lynley Dodd. We listened to several of her books including many about the character 'Hairy Maclary'. We drew story maps and learnt new words from the texts. We have talked about the characters, settings and sequence of the texts.
Buddies
During the whole school Olympic theme week, Prep students worked with their Year 5/6 Buddies to create an Olympic torch and an athlete piece of artwork. The display looked great. Well done everyone!
Mathematics
In Maths we have been learning all about Mass. We hefted a variety of objects from around the classroom to see what was heavier or lighter. We learnt that even if something is big it can still be light. We have also been learning about multiplication and division. We have been making groups and sharing with counters. During our Olympic theme we learnt about ordinal numbers. We can count in order from 1st to 10th or beyond.
Learning Through Play
We have also had lots of fun in our ‘Learning through Play’ sessions. We build, create, design, problem solve, use our imaginations and work as a team.
