Welcome
What a wonderful start to the Term and only half a term to go.
Our book week parade was phenomenal ! We had such a fantastic time seeing all the parents and students in our gym as a community.
Reminders:
Our Daley Nutrition incursion is on the 5th of September.
Sun smart Term: Students are most protected when wearing a broad brim hat to protect them from the sun's harmful UV rays and sunscreen.
When UV index levels are 3 or above (generally from mid-August to the end of April in Victoria, which covers most of the school year).
READING
In Reading, students explored different forms of advertisements and the language and techniques used to persuade people to buy or use the products being marketed in these advertisements. They researched how elements such as colours, visual images, words, phrases and slogans are used to enhance advertisements that showcase popular products such as fast foods and technology. Students also analysed different texts and explored the ways an author describes character emotions. They practised reading and organising information they read in chronological order using various graphic organisers, focusing on language such as beginning, middle and end.
WRITING
In Writing, students wrote a food advertisement where they explored strategies to persuade customers into buying their product and also conducted a debate from one of the advertisements they explored. They were given the opportunity to record and present their advertisement. Students wrote narratives using the correct sequence in chronological order. They used a range of descriptive words and dialogue to make their stories interesting. Students were also encouraged to edit their writing, do peer editing and get it corrected by the teacher to then be published. Throughout the Term, students focused on grammar to ensure they could apply this to all aspects of their writing.
MATHS
In Mathematics this term, Students have been continuing to progress in their understanding of fractions by working out the decimal equivalence.
Students investigated reading and interpreting data graphs as well as comparing data points of two products to help decide which product would suit their needs best.
They worked to deepen their understanding of decimals, and what happens when we multiply or divide a number by 10, 100, and 1000.
We are continuing to practise times tables and to accurately recall number facts.
The students have investigated different units of measurement, deciding which unit best suits the requirements of the task, selecting and using that measurement unit to compare distance, length and objects around the classroom.
The students have just finished exploring the perimeter of shapes, the area of a rectangle and the area of a triangle.
We are currently investigating working out how much time has past, grid coordinates and revisiting rounding up and down in order to more efficiently calculate using larger numbers.
INQUIRY
In Inquiry this Term we were focusing on Health, food and Physical Education and the impacts it has on our bodies and health.
This Term we introduced the “Inquiry Wondering Wall’ where students wrote down questions and wonderings about our Inquiry Topic. Students researched and investigated ways healthy eating is promoted such as the food pyramid and Australian Guide to healthy Eating. Students created their own healthy eating food truck which promoted healthy foods. We learnt about different foods and what nutritional values they have such as protein, carbohydrates, fats and vitamins. Students learnt about the importance that exercise has on their bodies. Students also researched different Olympians and their exercise routines and created athlete profiles. It has been an amazing and engaging Term of Inquiry so far and we are looking forward to the remaining lessons.
Priscilla - SEL
In SEL students have been working together to develop a school routine chart for their classes. Students brainstormed what kind of behaviours they need to demonstrate during the morning and afternoon in their classrooms. The Grade 4 teachers made posters with written routines for each class. Students also learned ways to manage stress using relaxation techniques and calming strategies. Students worked on developing a rap song which explored the meaning of Respect. They also worked in groups to role play different scenarios on how to care for others.
