Reading

In reading, students have been learning to identify the main idea of a text by using keywords that are repeated in the text, the title, pictures and captions that give key information about the text. They have also been learning about how to find evidence from the text to support the main idea. Students have also learnt to summarise the main events in a fiction text using the strategy of breaking down the story into 5 elements : somebody, wanted, but, so then. They have been learning to identify who the main character is, what the main character wanted, identify the problem, how the character solved the problem, how the story ended.

They have been learning that questioning is important whilst reading to clarify meaning and further our understanding of the text. Students have been learning to use 5Ws and 1 H strategy to summarise a non-fiction text where students learnt to Identify who the text is about, when and where the text takes place, why the text is important and how the text ends. They further learnt how to put this information together as a paragraph. They have been learning how to synthesise a text by identifying information that they already know about a topic, using information from the text to add to their knowledge and then merging the new information with the information they already know. They are also learning to use a range of strategies to recognise and take words apart to understand the meaning of difficult words.

Book Week was a fantastic way to celebrate reading at our school and in our lives. Thank you to all of our students who dressed up and participated in our Book Parade! Here are some photos of our fantastic dress ups.

Writing

What a fantastic month of writing we have had. We have all enjoyed writing recounts about our exciting trip to the MCG & Sports Musuem.

Numeracy

So far this term,  Grade 3 students began their exciting journey into numeracy by exploring the connection between division and multiplication. They used arrays to visualize and solve problems, both with and without remainders, helping to solidify their understanding of these fundamental concepts.

Students continued their exploration of multiplication and division, reinforcing their skills through hands-on activities and problem-solving exercises involving arrays. They deepened their comprehension of how division and multiplication are related. In Week 3, the focus shifted to fractions. Students practiced counting by fractions, including halves, thirds, quarters, and fifths. They also worked with improper fractions to understand and use them effectively in different scenarios. The week was dedicated to further strengthening fraction skills. Students continued their practice with various fractions and began to apply their knowledge in new ways. Students learned to recognize and compare fractions to determine which is larger, smaller, or equal. They also explored representing tenths as fractions and practiced identifying and creating unit fractions (such as halves, quarters, and eighths)  Students applied their understanding of fractions in a creative project. They learned ways of visually representing different fractions, showcasing their ability to express proportions..

we started off by folding paper and learning about a fraction wall. We then used this knowledge to help us create Veggie Patches and included the different fractional parts of our veggie patches.

We even made our own Fraction Pizzas!

Inquiry

We have had a very exciting term in Inquiry, we started off with a visit from Holly's Backyard Bees! Holly brought in one of her bee colony's for us and we learnt all about the daily functioning of a bee colony and the different roles of bees. We then used this information to complete our challenge brief - 'How can we protect Bees?'. We designed our own gardens at AHPS and made sure to include native flowers in our garden and protect members of the school community that are allergic to bees.

We have started to learn and investigate how we can be healthy. On Tuesday 27th of August we visited the MCG and Sports Museum. It was great to have a tour of the MCG, learn about Australian sports history in the museum and play interactive fitness games at 'Game On'.

SEL

In SEL we have been practicing and perfecting some of our school routines, we made some visual posters to display around our room to remind us of our routines. We have also been learning about working dogs including guide dogs, search and rescue dogs and how they can help people. We even learnt about our school Therapy Dog Victor and his role in the school.
